View Full Version : It's Draft Time and you're Jeff Ireland.......

The Following players are left on your Draft board...... You know that you're going defense. You just get a text from Bill saying you can't go wrong with any of these kids and that he's leaving the decision in your hands....Now the million dollar question is who do you take and why???

LB Rolando McClain - An absolute wrecking ball, McClain solidified many opinions by winning this year’s Butkus Award for the nations’ top linebacker. Perhaps the most remarkable and eventually endearing to a happy NFL defensive coordinator isn’t his imposing size or explosiveness. Instead, it may be his mental grasp of the game such as quickly understanding new schemes. McClain is one of the more coachable prospects in the 2010 draft.

LB Sergio Kindle - Not many prospects draft position are as volatile as Mr. Kindle’s. A terrific pass-rusher when he’s running on all cylinders. His 2008 season was one of the best in the country for a junior linebacker. Kindle was named Second-team All Big 12 and Third-team All American in 2009 after being selected to the First-team for both lists last year. General Managers may consider his 2007 drunken driving suspension and that little texting-while-driving incident earlier this year when he smashed into an apartment complex. Now you know who to thank once texting while driving is made illegal for everybody in the near future.

SS/FS Earl Thomas - The fact that Thomas is a red-shirt sophomore and remains in the shadows of the higher-profile defensive backs Eric Berry and Taylor Mays is probably why he remains somewhat underrated. Thomas proved enough this season he’s got the playmaking ability to suit up on Sunday’s. His 8 interceptions this year were good for second in the country—and two of those were pick sixes.

DE Jason PierrePaul - With only one year of professional football under his belt can you imagine how much unrealized potential this Bull has? He shares a small part of the spotlight with teammate George Selvie but he just may be the most explosive defensive end in this draft. A JUCO transfer from Kansas and Florida native, JPP began grabbing some of his own headlines against FSU earlier this year. Disrupting the Seminoles backfield all day he didn’t let up after that game and his stock has continued to rise and he has continued to live up to the hype through the Bulls International Bowl dismantling over Northern Illinois. JPP is a prototypical—albeit raw—blend of size, strength, quickness and agility coaches only dream about plugging at the DE spot.

LB Brandon Spikes - Scouts have had their sights set on the senior linebacker since he exploded onto the scene as a sophomore earning First Team All-SEC recognition. His senior season has been clouded by the “eye-gouging” incident against Georgia. Spikes has prototypical middle linebacker size and can light up running backs with the best of them. The biggest factor keeping him out of the Top 10 or even comparisons to 49ers LB Patrick Willis is his speed. Should he time well at the combine look out for him to jump 5-10 spots.

no question off that list it's mcclain all the way...

why kindle and spikes are on that list at #12 is beyond me....i don't have 1st round grades on either of them...let alone top 15

Honestly, just because YOU don't have first round grades on them, doesn't mean they aren't options at 12 for the Fins. How can you say they are out of the question, and the Combine and Pro days haven't even become close to starting yet.

It happens every year, look at Tyson Jackson from last year? #3 overall, bet u didn't have him there in january did u? BJ Raji was considered a 2nd rounder in january, and after the senior bowl practices, we knew he wouldn't be there at 25. Brian Cushing at 15? Nah, not in January he wasn't. Atleast, not on any of these big time mock draft websites he wasn't.

U are right, Spikes and Kindle have alot to prove in the next few months . . . especially Spikes, who was considered a for sure top 15 pick prior to this season, and he had an off year, we will see if he can gain that back. Nobody knows what these front offices are going to do, we all can guess, but I think its crazy to rule anybody with a top 50 grade out of the first round and out of the top 20 until we have seen them in the offseason pre draft workouts.

Not to get on u or anything, but we need help at ILB and OLB, and both guys have IMO top 5 grades in each position, and IMO are still very "in play" options for this team at 12. I have seen analysis where some think Kindle has the most upside as a 3-4 OLB in this draft . . . I mean whether I agree or not is a moot point, but the kid definitely has talent for a position we need. He may end up being a second rounder, he may go top 10, I wouldn't bet on anything right now.

With all that being said, I think it is a no brainer that we would take McClain if he was on the board. In fact, if the Fins had a big board right now, probably the only players you can put ahead of him are Suh and Berry (doubt they invest ANOTHER first round pick to the already most expensive OLine . . . our Dline is the strongest unit on the team so we don't do that, unless its Suh, who is just special . . . and we got our CB's last year so no Haden. Henne looks to be our QB of the future so no QB.) However, I'm starting to think with KC, Denver and Cleveland all drafting ahead of us, more than likely one of those teams will grab him, however he is still a very realistic choice at 12, because u know these QBs (Clausen, Bradford) and all of these LT prospects will get love as well, and may potentially flood the top 10.

I was checking out a few mocks, and it seems the best way to land McClain would be something like this:

2 DT's - Suh, McCoy
4 OL - Okung, Davis, Campbell, Bulaga
2 DB's - Berry, Haden
1 WR - Bryant
2 QB - Clausen, Bradford
1 DE - Morgan

I think from those 12 guys, a good chance alteast 8 or 9 of those guys are gone, and maybe 11 of em. Leaving McClain, who I know we don't pass on . . . EVEN if we got a guy like Dansby in FA. Guess we will have to wait and see.

Trade back and get weatherspoon better suited for miami than mclain in my mind after watching games and tape. Very smart, fast,a thumper, and battle proven what more can you ask for if you can trade back and get another 2nd. No question in my mind!

honestly...i'm just stating my opinion and that's after combing over a lot of tape on both of them...i don't give a 1st round grade to either one... as far as I"M concerned they're both out of the question for me at #12

kindle has upside but he's also raw and a developmental player to me at either olb position...

spikes i liked better on tape than i thought i would but there's a nasty rumor that he's gonna run an extremely slow 40 and even off the tape alone i don't see a 1st round player...

of course it's possible the fins could have different ideas...

b/t if kindle goes top 10 that gm should be fired...

I respect that, let me ask you, do you have both guys ranked in your top 5 at each position, and if not (if you want) who do you have as your top 5 at each position (OLB and ILB).

I kind of feel you are more of the BPA at a need (meaning if Clausen is best ranked on our board we don't take him because of Henne, but we could take Spiller because RB technically is a need), which I also agree with . . . so I'm just trying to figure what guys at those LB spots I need to be watching for, because I don't watch tape of individual players, but I have watched just about all of these guys (top 40 let's say) play in atleast 4 games this year and I read analysis and look for the pro's and cons in the game.

As for Kindle, he impressed me alot vs. Bama . . . he is physical as hell and athletically gifted. He hasn't had the grab you game, but he finally did against Bama and man did he look good. That is why I boosted him up. To do it on that stage and have the athletic talent that he has, I think there is a good chance he will be a top 15 pick. Obviously the combine will make or break that.

Imagine if Bama actually threw the ball more and didn't have that big running game, Kindle may of had about 5 sacks.

yeah...i'm a bpa at position of need kind of guy all the way...and i may even go bpa at position of non need if that player is so much better than the guys at positions of need...

anyways...this year a lot of my bpa happen to be at positions of need which imo is good for us...

ie mcclain dez bryant etc...

regarding kindle and spikes right now i think it's fair to say that for me i have them both inside the top 5 at olb and ilb...however right now i wouldn't personally use pick #43 on either one off the game tape although i can see my mind maybe changing on spikes...

as far as a top 5 at olb that's difficult for me at this stage cause i want to see these guys in standup drills and see how they look changing direction etc...thus the senior bowl and combine will go a long ways for me in can a particular college de make the switch to an 3-4 olb in the pros...or are they 4-3 every down ends or situational guys only

i also need to look at more tape on both the ilb and olbs...and mainly weatherspoon

Screwed what up? You mean whoever we would have selected would have put us over the top! I don't care for the P.White pick myself, I really was high on M.Johnson OLB and thought he brought extreme value at that pick. But that doesn't mean BP did anything wrong in trying to bring a change of pace and potentially big play player. I'm not writing White off yet, alot of you guys are funny that when rookies don't explode right off the bat then their failures.

Pat White is a wasted pick! BP is the one who wanted him so bad! His last play this year clearly demonstrated to me he is not and never will be physically NFL caliber. The guy looks like a mouse out there! We wasted that pick, we could have drafted a LB or somebody who could contribute right away! BP thought this guy could help us? Bad evaluation!

Scouts have said that McClain has an uncanny ability to dissect a play before it even happens, which reminds me a lot of Ed Reed in a LB body. This guy would be the anchor of our defense for the next decade. Thomas is a great player and projects well, but having a top safety is a luxury in the NFL and we can't afford that at this point.

MP-Omnis
01-19-2010, 07:07 PM
Now that we have Mike Nolan at coordinator, we absolutely MUST draft defense this year. We need our keystone linebacker (Mike Nolan used Ray Lewis masterfully) of the next decade.

As much as I think Dez Bryant is going to be a superstar, there is just way too much WR talent coming out for the next draft. We can make next season work with our current receivers. After all, we would have been in the playoffs were it not for our defense.

i'm not very familiar with pierre-paul and earl thomas ... although i've read plenty about them on the web i haven't watched a game starring either one ( well, i've watched their teams play but never focused on either player while watching the game.. )

so based on that, i'll pick amongst players i'm more familiar with, and go with rolando mcClain

I didn't put Berry on the list because i actually think that Earl Thomas is a better safety. I watched several Tenn. games this season and berry had some nice highlight moments but nothing spectacular. As for Thomas this kid can shut down one side of the field. He proved it in the Champ. game and several key Big 12 match ups. Berry's last bowl game helped me make this decision. This kid looked like he was confused and couldn't disect a play before it happened against Virgina Tech. Jason Allen had just as good or better of a career at Tennessee then Berry and look where he's at. So im high on Thomas, Pierre Paul or Kindle if we cant get Mcclain.

Ill stay at 12 personally and take either Dez, McClain, Spiller, Morgan or Thomas. If all are gone-highly unlikely. I would look at a guy like Spoon or Hughes. Second, regardless of first has to be D. I dont wanna pick a playmaker (Dez, Spiller) because it is a need (it is) i want to pick them because they are special talent. A guy cant fill the playmaker role-he is or he isnt- they are. D is the priority, but getting the best players is the biggest priority. Look at a guy like Brandon Graham, Wooten, Spikes in the second and a guy like Micah in the 3rd. Imagine how much stronger we would be with Thomas, Graham, and Micah in our D. Make a splash in the offseason with a Dansby or Bryant type.
