I can play this game, but before moving onto some others including The Boss, Van and of coure The Band, Bobby Zimmerman's excellent body of work is way too robust and impressive to dispense with even after listing 30 songs!

Stuck Inside of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
Forever Young
Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
Girl From The North Country (Johnny Cash Duet)
Knocking On Heaven's Door
Idiot Wind

I bought this cover quite awhile ago.. I see it's gone up in price but is still reasonable.

I listen to about everything, but since we're talking rock here i won't be talking about daft punk, dr.dre or any other kind of stuff.

One of my favorite vintage rock bands:

The Doors:

5- L.A. Woman
4- Back door man
3- The End
2- Heroin
1- Roadhouse Blues

Break on through, Light my fire and riders on the storm were almost chosen to make this top 5... but they're so popular, and you hear'em so often, i got tired ... roadhouse blues is popular also, but there's just no better track to start partying

2. sister luck
3. she talks to angels
4. nonfiction
5. bad luck blue eyes, goodbye
6. seeing things for the first time

vaark - black crowes were actually what got me into the band. saw them when i was like a sophomore in high school - and half of the show was the band covers - and it was amazing. the band (and the allman brothers) was apparently a huge influence on chris robinson and just about every time he does a show he does a ton of the band covers. i went home that night trying to figure out what those songs were - and there it was - and i've been a huge fan ever since.

Better late than never in finding them. IMO, you don't get any better than The Band.

I've been into them forever - before "The Last Waltz" which ironically got them the pop recognition after making the decision to disband. This was Scorsese's first documentary, he was a huge fan from the start. Go find some old Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks performing in Canada.. they were The Hawks. Also, much of the Dylan music that you love feature them as his backup band (listen to the Basement Tapes, if you've never heard them). I went into week long funks when Richard Manual did himself in and then again when Rick Danko died young and in bad health. Who'd have thunk that 4 Canucks from Ontario including the seminal writer of all their material and under-appreciated guitar maestro who's half Native Indian and half Jewish, plus a guy from Arkansas could create music on such a high level, eh?. Incidentally, believe it or not, a few years ago, through a mutual friend, I had the opportunity to stop by Levon Helm's house when I was up in Woodstock, and personally thank him for all the years of pleasure their music gave and continues to give me.

very cool. i was only 15 when i found them (sophomore) - so it wasn't too late. not too many people start listening to that stuff that young - never really had an ear for pop. went straight from rock to older rock.

i knew they started out with dylan way back when - actually got into his stuff later on in high school. i'm so glad they took the 'from big pink' off the end back in the day.

it's sad how many of them have died. very cool that you met helm - i'd like to shake his hand.

You have a point, but I just love Soulshine too much .. that's why on some of the lists I feel compelled to have 6 instead of 5 ::chuckle:

PS: I could have made the same complaint about you leaving "Whatever Gets You Thru The Night" off the Lennon list.. since it's my favorite of all his solo works.

In no particular order although Derek and The Dominos with Duane Allman and Clapton on lead guitars set an almost impossible standard to surpass:

Layla

Bad Love

UPdated Correction: was watching a couple of fast moving charts and not really concentrating on this. I'm ashamed to admit that I overlooked Glen Fry's far and away greatest solo song which actually was used on Miami Vice: "You Belong To The City ( think that's the name)." That zooms to the head of his list, and maybe even a combined Frey-Henley top solo list.

If you like the MotorCity Sound of tight vocals, harmony and melodic songs, you'd probably like doowop. I've got a few thousand songs on the mp3 that i listen to when in the mood, as well as I do on streaming radio. I'll get into some of the more prolific groups as we go along and they occur to me, but here's my all time favorite ballad done by one of 3 or 4 groups back in the day, all of which were successful. Have you ever heard this song? My son, who originally only liked rap, starting listening to doowop when he was 13 and has more songs than I do a few years later.
