I was talking about bowling with Ricky in a thread recently, and I wondered how many bowlers we had here.

I'm not very good yet, but I'm improving. This is my third year in a league.

I currently have a 148 average.

Team Lebowski is rolling along at a pretty good pace this year. We finished tied for third in the first leg of the season, and we're currently tied for first as the second leg ends tomorrow (we roll bums, while t-1st rolls 3rd place) ... I like our chances.

Anyone else?

I went thru an extended period in my life up until about 9-10 years ago where I bowled with friends every Sunday morning and in one or two summer and winter evening leagues. I used to shlep a double bag carrying a reactive urethane fingertip, plus a rubber ball for all those 7-pin tap spares I'd leave when it was the worst time to do so. (I'm a lefty).

I once was at a Pro Am in Thousand Oaks bowling with Pete Weber who said something interesting about the sport that's very true. He told me he bowled for a living but played golf for fun but would have done it the reverse if he could since you usually end up with the golf score you deserve whereas there are just too many things beyond your control that can sabotage your bowling outcome. Interesting astute observation.

Funny you should mention this, since I've been giving some thought lately to digging a couple of those balls out and heading off for some solo bowling after the late leagues finish up.

Well, Bumpus you already know but I guess I will tell everyone else.

I have been bowling for roughly 8 years, and am currently in a Saturday morning league, unfortunately. I average about a 172, and my high game is a 234. I have had a 600 set once before. In the last 2 years, my average has risen 30 pins. I have 4 bowling balls. I bowl right handed with a throw that hooks back in and hits right in the pocket. I bowl finger tip; I think most who throw a hook ball do. That is all.

My sister is 5'2 and about 110lbs. She consistently bowls in the 220's lol. I don't know how she does it. I do good to hit the 180's.

My brother is 4 years older than me and gets a 600 set just about everytime he bowls. Although, I'm sure your sister hits at about 660.

I don't even know what 660 is. I thought 300 was the highest.

I once bowled a 300...on the Wii.

660 set. A set is 3 games.

I always tried to bowl a 300 on the wii, but I never could. I think I got like a 292 after choking on the last game, and that was the last I've even seen on that damn machine.

"Team Lebowski"

Best team name ever  technically Chico's Bail Bonds was just the sponsor of the Bad News Bears not the name of the team so you win.

BTW I bowl in the 120's w/bumpers and in the mid 70's w/o unless I'm drinking then I always manage to get kicked out before I finish the game.

Maybe I've never mentioned this on here before but I'm missing half of my left foot and my entire right leg plus I'm blind in one eye and have multiple sclerosis.......oh and testicular cancer and only 1 finger on my bowling hand. So thanks for making fun of my 120 average and visine addiction (it's the only thing that makes the pain go away)

I bowl finger tip; I think most who throw a hook ball do. That is all.

As a lefty, I tried to pattern my game, approach and hook trajectory after Mike Aulby and threw pretty much the line, whenever possible that he does at about 2:20 of the video.. around the 7th board and swinging out to the 3rd before hooking in.. but usually not with the same outcome:chuckle: . Parker Bohn often throws a similar down and in angle but from the 3rd board, dry oil pattern permitting. Both those guys have a lot more revolutions than I could ever crank while keeping my accuracy. My high was 279 in league and high series was somewhere in the low 660s if I remember correctly. Neither happened too frequently though. My leagues average ranged anywhere from 185-192 but considering how much I bowled, for how long, and the tutoring of a former semi pro longtime friend who averaged over 210, it should have been higher. I've bowled socially, about 4 times in 8-9 years, 3 games each, and like clockwork, every time the second game hit 200 and the third game slid back into the 140s-160s. At this point I'd be pleasantly surprised if I can average 160 in league, especially considering the new oil patterns they've been laying down. I do miss the beer frames though .

You know, some people ostracize bowling as a bogus sport, especially Jim
Rome. And there's the stereotype that it's a blue collar, beer belly activity, but I can tell you, on every one of my leagues, there were as many Lexuses, Infinities, Bimmers and Mercs in the parking lot as Chevys and pickups, and my "tutor" and another friend I regularly bowled with are business owners with net worths over 8-figures. So **** the critics, like a number of other individual sports, it requires dedication, skill, conditioning, endurance, adjustment, and concentration to bowl effectively.

Bowling's always a great way to pass the time. Haven't been in awhile, though I normally get in the 150s-160s, and that's usually because I've got a pitcher of Sierra Nevada for the group of us.

Last time I went, I managed to piss off this entire group of old people (like 60s-70s old) who were in the next lane over.

They kept pissing and moaning that I wasn't observing proper bowling etiquette.

I used to bowl in a league (2-3 years) and I'd like to get started again. When I left that league I had a 176 average.

My best game ever was a 254.

WTG...500 series are respectable. Soon they'll have you bowling anchor, eh? But don't let that new personal high go to your head.. it'll be even harder to repeat once they remove the channel bumpers.

Oh, you've inspired me to start thinking seriously again about dusting off my old balls and looking for a competitive league where I can bond with my teammates and don't get stuck for too many beer frames. I found an old pic of one of the more cutthroat scratch leagues in which I bowled and, if I do say so myself, didn't do too badly at all.

Wow. Seems like Im the best bowler on FH. At least Im the best at something around here.

Anyways, I had to quit the league last season. My back simply wouldnt allow me to continue. After carrying an avg. between 210-220 for the first 3 months, I had back to back series of around 430, the worst since I was like 10 years old thanks to the pain shooting down my leg and hip which would not allow me to follow through in my shot. After being one of only two bowlers in the best league at the local alley who negotiated a min. 600 series for every week at that point, I dropped my average all the way down to 198 with those 2 performances.

I had to quit for the season and had my surgery in Febuary. The nuerosurgeon tells me I probably wont be able to bowl again till at least next Febuary or I would risk more problems. It was disappointing news. I had just gotten back into the game and really felt my shot coming on in the early weeks of the season. I suffered through some pain, but up until those last two weeks I was able to follow through for the most part. I wonder what I couldve been shooting had I not had any pain.

The previous season was my first year bowling in league competition after a 11 year hiatus. When I was 18 I shot a 727 series. Nowadays, they give scholarships to good youth league bowlers. At least more frequently. Those were rare in my day. There were only a few really competative schools. I was on the team at WVU but, it was merely a club sport. I quit after my freshman year.

The technology in the balls and the lane conditions are much more advanced these days and more advantagous to big scoring. Just 15 years ago, the high average in the place year to year was around 210 tops. Typically my father held that distinction. These days, the guy who was the best on my youth league team averages almost 230 on a year to year basis. Its sick. He was the other guy to have a 600 every week along with me in that one league this year btw.

Last year, my first season returning, I was using a ball nearly 15 years old that in no way matched up to what the good bowlers were using now. I averaged almost 200 for the season. At years end, I bought a new ball and it paid big dividens in a hurry. I was killing it out there. About a month before I had to quit I had my first 700 series since I was a teen and won the designated strike pot for about $350. You have to get a strike in each and every one of ten designated frames.

Anyway, I kick *** at the game and Im not sure if and when I will return to it. If I ever get my back to 100% health again, I will destroy everyone out there.

Bumpus

Damn, bro. Sucks to hear about your back.

An average above 200 is f'in great, but near 220 is just sick!

 ... & I was just happy to up my career best game to 233. You'd have to spot me a ****load of pins just to even make it interesting (avg: 160)

We've got two members of Team Lebowski who avg north of 200 ... I'm the weak link, but I've only been bowling for three years so I'm still seeing improvement.

Summer league tourney is tomorrow night. Wish me luck (I could use some extra loot for my trip to Vegas on Friday :))

Rest that back, bro. Don't try to come back too soon. Those injuries can be a ***** (as I'm sure you know)
