Six thousand deaths over the last decade could have been avoided if Americans drank less soda and sugary beverages, according to an analysis from the University of California, San Francisco.

The analysis found that America's growing sweet drink addiction has taken a hefty toll through health outcomes such as heart disease and diabetes and via higher health care costs.

Diana Ray of Danville, Ky., is familiar with the negative effects of soda addiction. Since she retired from her job as a registered nurse, Ray's consumption of soda steadily inched upward until she was drinking five to eight cans a day -- as much as an extra 1,200 extra calories and 328 grams of added sugar.

"I always have a Pepsi open on the table next to the bed, when I'm in bed in the morning with my coffee," Ray said. "It's an addiction."

Five to eight cans of soda per day? Well no **** that's not a good thing. I drink one a day, either Diet Barq's or Diet Coke. Will it kill me any more or less than lightning, a rabid werewolf, or Epic Beard Man?

I dunno how valid that study is.
After all, this respected professional group recommends the drinking of at least 8 sugared sodas/day.

6,000 deaths over 10 years is not very significant.

No, but it can still make you fatter.

Which argument will you use to support your claim? That drinking diet sodas tricks me into thinking it's cool to eat 50 Big Macs?

It's very cool to eat 50 BigMac's. Just imagine witnessing gluttony on that scale.

Edit: I always liked watching Cool Hand Luke eat 50 eggs. But, hell ... those were just eggs.

I stopped drinking Mountain Dew and I lost 30 pounds. Of course, I was drinking like 3 cans a day.

Agreed Cedar. I drank pop all the time, I've been drinking water the past 2 months and have already lost 30+ pounds between that and working out.

I did the same thing. Now I only drink iced tea and water. That, and those "Naked" juice drinks.

See, that's my problem ... If beer had no calories, I'd be one skinny MF'er.

But, I like beer ALOT - so I'm fat. I consider it a good trade.

Yeah, nothing but water. once a week or so i'll add one of those little mixable kool-aid packets to a bottle and drink it. But almost always just bottled water

Major props to you then. I don't know how you can stand drinking only bottled water all day everyday.
