Dolphins eyeing Georgia Tech’s Derrick Morgan

by Edgar Thompson
The draft is 41 days away, so a lot could change, but one NFL scout said Georgia Tech’s Derrick Morgan is picking up steam with the Dolphins.
Morgan was considered a surefire top-10 pick a month ago, but as some players, like Maryland offensive tackle Bruce Campbell and USF’s Jason Pierre-Paul, have moved up, Morgan has dipped a bit to make room.
The 6-foot-3, 266-pound Morgan could fall to No. 12 and the Dolphins, who’d move him from defensive end to 3-4 outside rush linebacker.

Morgan would have to play around 255 to 258 pounds in the 3-4, but according to the scout looked very good on tape playing in a two-point stance (10% of plays) and showed enough athletic ability in his workouts.
Morgan also showed some smarts, scoring 24 on his Wonderlic test, and his know as a high-character, hard-working player.
Many have Morgan slotted as a 4-3 end, but the Dolphins and many NFL personnel types see a 3-4 pass-rushing LB.
Morgan put up some pretty impressive numbers compared with another possible OLB candidate for the Dolphins, Texas’ Sergio Kindle.
Morgan weighed 16 pounds more than the 250-pound Kindle, yet ran a 4.78 in the 40-yard dash, compared with 4.7 for Kindle.
Morgan ran the 20-yard dash in 2.74 (2.73 for Kindle) and covered 10 yards in 1.6 seconds (1.63 for Kindle).
Morgan bench-pressed 225 pounds 34 times, nine more times than Kindle and also had faster times in the shuttle run (4.43 to 4.54) and cone drills (7.14 to 7.27).
These numbers show better strength, quickness and change of direction from a bigger player.
If he’s around at No. 12, which is debatable, Morgan could land with the Dolphins.

Which of course probably means we are NOT picking this guy.

Berry or Thomas at 12. Solve this Safety issue once and for all. Then double up on LB's DT's and another safety in this draft. We all know how much the Trifecta loves to do that, and why fix it if it aint broke?

I am sure we are eyeing a lot of players right now with 11 teams drafting infront of us. Plus the dynamic of a weak FA means teams might be more aggressive in draft day trades. This means we are going to have to look at a lot more players. Not to mention all the holes we have.
