Just something to think about. The Cowboys like Dez Bryant. They're having him in for a visit. There's no way he will be available when they draft. the Dolphins like Austin. The Cowboys and Dolphins have a trade history. Could something be brewing ? Anything is possible.

Interesting theory. The other theory would be that Dallas, might be thinking he just may slip that far. Not a whole lot of good press on Dez as of late.

I don't think the Cowboys are letting Austin go. If anything, I would imagine they go after Dez Bryant to compliment Austin, not replace him.

I would rather just trade our first for Marshall...or keep Dez and let him develop in our system. I would be highly upset if they traded Dez for Austin because I think Austin has hit his ceiling and I think Dezs' is higher.

I find it more interesting that the Cowboys are looking at people that could be in the 12-spot range period.

The Dolphins have an extensive history of trading with Dallas, and with the holes the team has I believe they want to move trade down badly...Dallas would be the partner to trade down that no one would be surprised at.

imo you would be able to do the first trade our first for Marshall BUT as for drafting Dez Byrant its not going to happen that is if Marshall is out of denver next year because denver will grab Dez with the #11 pick and if we dont grab Marshall we will lose out on both players...

http://www.finheaven.com/images/imported/2011/04/9705-1.jpg (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9705) Destinations for Marshall

The first speculation was that Marshall would be headed to the Seahawks or the Redskins, via two of our NFL Nation bloggers.
Cincinnati has a need for a second wide receiver to go with Chad Ochocinco (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=2584), but we're not sure the Bengals would want another head case.
The Cowboys need a legitimate No. 1 WR, and Jerry Jones would have no problem forking over cash for a new deal to Marshall.
The Bucs and Dolphins have been loosely linked to the UCF alum.

The Seattle Seahawks (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=sea) are still the only team to have hosted RFA Brandon Marshall (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9705) for an investigative visit, and we've heard creative ways that they're trying to obtain him while retaining the No. 6 overall pick.
We've also heard some buzz about the Miami Dolphins (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=mia) and New York Jets (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=nyj) being interested in the young, elite wideout, but both of those teams seem to flinch whenever their first-round picks are involved, too.
But one of the other teams that we've always thought made sense -- the Dallas Cowboys (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=dal) -- is rumored to be quite interested in Oklahoma State product Dez Bryant, enough that they've scheduled a private workout with him in the hopes that he'll fall to their pick at No. 27 overall. It's also possible that they like Bryant so much they would trade up to make sure they could draft him. Well, if that's the case, ESPN's Bill Williamson wonders, why don't they go after Marshall instead? The "head case" allegations against both are a wash, Marshall is not much older and he is a proven commodity at the highest level.

If Dallas wants Dez so bad they can give us their 1st and 2nd this year and their 1st next year. 15 spots is a lot to move down, but 27 would be a good spot for one of the other receivers and we'd have two 2nds and a 3rd to shore up FS and OLB. Next year with two firsts we'd be in a prime spot to make the jump from playoff contender to Super Bowl contender.

It's possible that the Dolphins and Cowboys have an understanding that Miami would give up the #12 pick for Miles Austin, and so Jerry is looking at Dez Bryant and Brandon Marshall to see if that's something that would be attractive. I think he'll come to the conclusion that it's not a very attractive option, to be honest.

i'm gonna be in the minority here but miles austin is gonna have to show me it for more than 1 year if i'm gonna give up the #12 pick in the draft for him...

I don't get it. Anyone you take at #12 won't have even shown "it" for 1 game, let alone multiple years (and yes, it's multiple years, he's been on radar and performed well more than just 2009).

wasn't miles austin always hurt it seemed prior to last season??? that's what i recall...and wasn't he nothing more than a #3 wr before this past season???

i know he blew up last season but i saw ALOT of big plays from him where the cb tackling was horrendous...that's just as much a credit to him being able to avoid tackles as it is a knock on the cb play against him i know but he was catching some 10 yard outs and cbs weren't even getting him out of bounds...

i guess what i would do is wait til the draft see what's on the board when we pick and then decide if i want to offer it up in trade...definitely not something i'd do before knowing what was available unless the cowboys or whoever made it an offer i couldn't refuse...and right now for me at least miles austin straight up isn't doing it

Austin and Brandon Marshall have a habit of breaking tackles. If you watch these guys play a lot, you'll see a lot of "horrendous" tackling. Unlike Ted Ginn, they always try to escape tackles and out-maneuver would-be tacklers.

Basically, they break ankles and make guys look bad.

I don't know if he was hurt a lot or not but I do know that I've never heard of him having an injury once in his career.

This is what I know about his career. He went to Monmouth, tiny college, poor competition. He showed up at the Combine and had more than legit size and athleticism, in fact he was a very compelling athlete that would have ranked among the best in any kind of size-adjusted athletic scoring system you could come up with, if you were so inclined (I was, and I did, and he ranked high, that's how I know that). I had him as a very draftable WR but he went UDFA anyway and his first couple of years he was mostly a kick returner. He happened to be a damn good one, though. He started to see more opportunities on the offense, where he was a big play machine. In 2008, he only took 144 snaps on passing plays, but he was thrown at 22 times, caught 13 balls for 278 yards and 3 TDs. One thing I like to look at is how many yards you produce per pass snap and his 1.94 rates pretty damn high league-wide. But he got even better in 2009 because he was on the field for 581 pass snaps, was thrown at 138 times, caught 92 balls for 1436 yards which boils down to 2.47 yards every pass play the guy was on the field...among the highest in football (if not the absolute highest).

He was not the #3 WR. He may have started out that way. He didn't really start until Week 5 (which is why his numbers are all the more impressive). That week he caught 10 passes for 250 yards and 2 TDs. From that moment on, defenses considered him to be the most dangerous pass receiving threat on the team. Prior to that, Jason Witten was having a tough start to the season, catching 28 balls for 259 yards and 1 TD in 5 games. That's really not up to his standards. After Miles Austin sent shockwaves through the league with that 250 yard performance, and especially after he followed up the very next game with a 6 catch, 171 yard and 2 TD performance against the Falcons, Jason Witten starts becoming more productive. He started averaging 20 more yards a game.

Thing is, even if you for some reason discard the production in those first two games, you have a guy that produced 934 yards and 7 TDs over the next 12 games. Everyone at that point knew he was a starter. They knew he was going to get the ball thrown at him a bunch. They knew he was big and could run and was a heck of an athlete. He still averaged 78 yards and over half a TD a game from that point on.

He's an impressive guy because he won't go down easily. He's big and physical and runs well and has good balance. He's come up the hard way having to earn all his playing time through the likes of much more heralded guys like Terrell Owens, Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton. But that didn't stop the Jets from giving very strong consideration to sending a 2nd round pick for him before he broke out in 2009. They brought him in for a visit and considered it very strongly, ultimately deciding not to because they wanted to use the pick as ammo to try and trade up for Sanchez. The rumor has it Miami considered him as well.

03-19-2010, 02:11 PM
i'm not gonna argue the #s... the #s are great...my point is i'd like to see the production stay up for another season before i offered that high a pick for him...that's all...

some people may say i'm not a true believer yet that he's a premier wr in this league...i guess that would be a fare assessment...

ckparrothead
03-19-2010, 02:14 PM
But WHY do you need to see another season of production? We haven't even seen a single game's worth of production out of any of these rookies, and yet we're happily "trading" the #12 pick for one of them and then giving them a contract worth $4 or $5 million a year.

Well I haven't combed over Miles' games but I have seen him play enough to know that dude has some serious talent as well.

I'm very convinced about Dez Bryant's game but you have to recognize that he hasn't done it yet at the pro level while Miles Austin has and when it comes to character, Miles Austin is no Brandon Marshall. He's a saint that had to fight for everything the hard way because he went to Monmouth.

I love Dez - can see it all over the draft board - but there's a very slim chance that he ever puts up numbers (in the NFL) comparable to the numbers Austin put up in '09.

Even if Berry is sitting there to be drafted at #12, I probably send the pick to Dallas in exchange for Austin.
