Scientists have come a step closer to making Harry Potter-style invisibility cloaks a reality.

Researchers at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, in Germany, have created the first device to render an object invisible in three dimensions.

By placing a “cloak” over a tiny lump of gold measuring 0.00004 in by 0.00005 in, they were able to distort the light hitting the object in such a way that the bump appears invisible at nearly visible infrared frequencies.

Previously developed cloaks worked only in two dimensions and only worked if viewed from a specific angle. They also only worked for microwave frequencies. The new cloak works for infrared light — a step closer to the visible spectrum. For some reason I can't see this working.

There's a thread about this in the science forum, but for something so often, it can have its own thread here.

What would really be awesome would be to get one of those jetpacks, throw on an invisibility sheet, and you'd be set.

This is what scientists spend their time doing?

Interesting.

How about this: hidden cameras that really aren't that well-hidden are now completely invisible.

PS - Sorry about missing the post in the Science forum. I checked here first and stopped.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the US Military take this whole thing over.

That's the MO I'm afraid. "Our R&D budget is blown for the year, but if something out there works for someone and it's useful to us, we'll own it."

That's why you cut a hole in the cloak so it's like a floating penis just waving in the breeze :d-day:
