Great NT do not not come along every year. This draft is deep in them and those teams that get them will prove to win out long term. The defense starts in the middle and we may not get this chance again for a long time. Further its one of our greatest areas of need. I know most on this forum are pushing for LB or WR but our best value is here at NT.

Overview The addition of Lane and Monte Kiffin was supposed to unleash the playmaking ability of back-seven defenders Eric Berry and Rico McCoy. Williams, however, proved the true beneficiary in the defensive interior.
The massive space-eater inside entered his senior campaign with 19 career starts and averaging 44 tackles the previous two seasons. He was viewed as a potential mid-round pick. However, Williams quickly developed into one of the SEC's most feared big men, registering 61 tackles over the regular season to lead all conference linemen.
Possessing a combination of great strength and burst to project nicely at defensive tackle or on the nose, Williams may only have to convince scouts that his senior campaign wasn't a fluke to rank among the elite in what some believe is an historic class of interior defensive linemen.

We can get NT Cam Thomas in the 2nd or 3rd round and he is a beast....if he is gone we take Linval Joseph.

Yeah, I want to spend a top-15 pick on a two-down NT that isn't particularly strong against the run.

I think we lost games last year due to play at the Safety position more than anything... If we go defense, the BPA will probably be Earl Thomas. And I believe he fills a larger need than a NT.

We can get a better NT for a lesser pick

I would be shocked if this regime picked Dan Williams at 12. It would go against everything they believe in and what they have done in the past. Parcells does not take one year wonders or nose tackles high in the draft. Dan Williams represents both of those. I hope like hell Dan Williams isn't the pick.

Fail.

Dan Williams is not even a great NT prospect, much less the far and away BPA @ 12.

The guy's good. That's it. Talented, sure. But he's definitely an underachiever on tape. He managed to turned it on during the all-star games, but that's a good and bad thing. Where's it been, you've got to wonder? If I put together a board, he would be at best a fringe first round pick, and more likely somewhere in the second. Possibly farther down than that. Nose tackles are only part time players, so their value is below that of many other positions.

Also, there's the info in my sig. Take it to heart.

Williams does not always play with the proper pad level. He gets too high when he comes out of his stance and gets stood up at the point. Does he have the talent to play at the next level? Certainly, but he will have to work on his technique. JMHO :D

Williams is a fine player but if you look at Parcells long history and Irelands shorter draft history, NT and S are something they dont take in the first round. Parcells has take a lot of OLB, DE and CB in the first but his NT have been low round picks like Ferguson and Ratliff. I am not saying its right or wrong , just saying I cannt see them changing .

There will be run on NTs as teams are going 3\4..., no NT no 3\4

dan williams is not a NT, he is a DT who belongs in a 4-3
where he has spent his whole life.

you really want to spend the #12 pic on a guy who has
never played the position and could only bench 22 reps
at the combine?

why?

MOST dt's DO NOT make the transition to NT. its rare. and the
one's who do possess brute strength and exellent leverage.

unfortunately for williams, he posesses neither of those.

with so many things we really need, i just dont get why some want to
gamble a hi round pic on a guy who has never played the posiiton and
doesnt have the main skills you need to play it.

Bill Parcells has always drafted his nose tackles in the later rounds. Just look at BJ Raji who was a better prospect than Dan Williams. Hes struggling to adapt to the pro game.

Nose Tackle is a position that you just cant come in and be dominant straight from college.

Dan Williams was inconsistent along with the rest of the Vols defense last year. They would look great against a team like Alabama and then let Dexter McCluster look All World against them.
NTs rarely get drafted in the top half of the 1st round, and I don't think Williams is worth the 12th overall pick. He's definitely NOT the BPA at 12.

To all of you that are down on Dan Williams, a little light reading; Copyright NFLDraftScout.com, distributed by The Sports Xchange Latest News

They observed 14 Volunteers and these players stood out: Defensive lineman Dan Williams (6-1 7/8, 327) stood on his combine numbers and did position drills. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com 03/12/2010 - TOP RATED NFL DRAFT SCOUT DEFENSIVE TACKLES: Dan Williams: Tennessee, 6-2, 329, 1-2: Williams was one of the biggest benefactors when Monte Kiffin was brought in to coach the defense in 2009. In one season, Williams went from a mid-round prospect to a potential first- or second-rounder after he led SEC defensive linemen with 61 tackles. This wide body is built for power and uses it effectively despite the fact he is learning how to stay low and use leverage. Williams has excellent straight-ahead quickness and backs that up with sheer power to keep blockers going backward. He has awareness and reaction that help overcome a lack of elite lateral agility. - Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com/CBS Sports/USA TODAY ''This kid has up side and loves the game.''

03/08/2010 - NG Ferguson suspended, Dan Williams for Fins? Ferguson has long been a Bill Parcells' favorite, playing for him with the New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys and Miami. The Dolphins plugged veterans Tony McDaniel and Paul Solai in at the nose guard position last year when Ferguson went down with a torn triceps, but it is thought that the team would like to upgrade - and that was with Ferguson being an option. With Ferguson not an option for at least half of the season, the club could look to trade for Shaun Rogers, who the Browns reportedly have placed on the market, or look to the draft. If they look to the draft, former Tennessee defensive tackle Dan Williams might be the perfect solution. Selecting a nose guard with the 12th overall pick might seem too rich, but considering how many clubs are switching to the 3-4 scheme and the number of nose guards this year who have been franchised, the position is clearly gaining in value. Williams, 6-2, 329 pounds, was the most dominant lineman in the SEC this past season, despite being miscast as a defensive tackle in the 4-3. He is precisely the type of squatty, powerful two-gap fire hydrant teams are looking for in a nose guard. Considering Miami's gaping hole at the position, Williams could be the perfect fit. - Rob Rang, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com ''I will take these observations to the bank over your expert opinions.''
