Seymour's PR savvy paying off
By Michael Felger/Patriots Notebook
Thursday, December 4, 2003

FOXBORO - Richard Seymour [news] is not only the most talented player on the Patriots [stats, news] roster. With all due respect to Tom Brady [news] and Adam Vinatieri [news], Seymour is also likely to be the Pats' next superstar.

The recognition for Seymour's abilities is certainly starting to increase. Seymour is ranked first among AFC interior defensive linemen in fan balloting for the Pro Bowl, making him a prohibitive favorite to make his second straight trip to Hawaii.

Beyond that, no one on the Pats roster works harder at marketing himself, and it's paying off. Seymour has his own Web site and his own weekly television segment on Fox Sports Net. On Tuesday, he appeared on the ESPN game show ``HearSay.'' He did a stint on the Jim Rome show last week. He's never met a microphone he didn't like.

But what makes Seymour unique is that through all the self-promotion, he never loses the team concept.

``It's always important to market yourself as a player. But the more you win and the more you do your job and stay humble, then good things are going to come your way,'' he said yesterday. ``That's what's been happening to me lately. But on this football team, it really doesn't matter to us. The ultimate goal is to get back to where we once were. And we're not there yet. The better individual effort you can give, the better it's going to make the team without sacrificing some of your own personal stuff. It works both ways.''

For the first time anyone could remember, Seymour refused to speak to the media in Indianapolis last Sunday. Some wondered if Ted Washington, who dresses next to Seymour and doesn't talk to the press, had rubbed off on him.

Not so. Seymour said he was merely tired. He was also a bit frustrated by bursting through the Colts line all day and not recording a sack on Peyton Manning. The one time Seymour sacked Manning, the play was nullified on a defensive holding call.

Seymour will probably never put up huge sack totals because of the system he plays in. Unlike Miami's Jason Taylor, for instance, Seymour doesn't line up on the edge and rush the passer every down. In Bill Belichick's two-gap scheme, Seymour is an interior player whose first responsibility is often holding the line of scrimmage.

``It's frustrating at points,'' he said. ``But you just have to keep pushing on and not allow them to sit back there untested. Even though you don't get sacks as interior linemen, if you can add pressure and force him to get the ball away - you can get paid for that, too.''

Seymour said the league is reviewing one play in which Seymour chased Manning out of bounds. It was ruled a run, but if it's determined Manning went out behind the line of scrimmage, Seymour will be credited with a sack (he currently has 5 on the year).

Brown looks on

Troy Brown [news] (leg) continued to sit out practice. He's once again questionable for Sunday. Linebacker Mike Vrabel [news] was added to the injury report after sitting out with the flu. Vrabel is questionable, as is special teamer Chris Akins, who sat out with a knee injury.

For the first time since Week 3, Brady did not appear on the injury report. Dan Klecko [news] is probable with a dislocated left thumb. . . .

Elsewhere in the Pro Bowl voting, safety Rodney Harrison [news] and guard Joe Andruzzi are second at their respective positions. Ty Law [news] is third at cornerback while Brady is fourth at quarterback (behind Steve McNair, Manning and Trent Green). . . .

Brady half-joked that Belichick blew it when he didn't challenge an apparent touchdown catch by J.J. Stokes in Indy. ``Trust me, he heard about that one,'' said Brady. ``He was a little slow on that one.'' . . .

Brady owns the best career winning percentage among active quarterbacks (.714). Dolphins quarterback Jay Fiedler is third (.694). When asked what Fiedler does well as a player, Belichick said: ``Take a look at the final score.''

Plans on hold-er

Belichick said Vinatieri's new holder will come from among the Pats' three quarterbacks. If that happens to be Damon Huard, the Pats will either have to activate three quarterbacks for the Dolphins, or Rohan Davey will have to go back to being the emergency guy. Brady doubted it would be him taking over the holder role.

``I think they have someone else in mind,'' he said.

Vinatieri has only had three holders in his career: Tom Tupa, Lee Johnson and the just-released Ken Walter.

``We'll work a few guys this week and see what's best,'' said Vinatieri. ``I'm sure it will work out.''

Seau has played a few games against the Pats over the years - he's got an O-fer - never beat thjem. It's easy to fool him "here, Jr, come gett the ball...good boy!" as the RB/WR goes in untouched...lol!

Love the remarkable use of stats guys! To a team, though, they're unimportant. Someday you'll understand and appreciate this. IT'S A TEAM GAME! Tedy has been to the dance twice, won once. He was a big reason we got there. Our D sh!t the bed last season when he got knocked out.

Of course, the Seymour argument shows the true level of Fin fans knowledge of football and the AFC East......the group wonderlic must be around a 15:) There's nobody on the Fins except perhaps Ricky that dominate a position as Seymour does. Don't feel too ad - there's very few in the NFL. Oh, darn! I forgot, He only has 5.5 sacks, so he sucks! Get a clue!

Seymour's job is to stop the run, not sack. See you are proving me right. I guess you don't know much about football. The Pats system is not design for Seymour to pressure the QB. That is why he does not have many sacks.

Seymour would be the Dolphins best D-lineman. In the Dolphins system, Seymour would have 10-15 sacks this year.

And he has one of those things in my avatar....bling;)

That shows, that you know squat about football because our defense is designed for the DT to induce double teams, so seymour would probably have less than 5.5. right now with us.

Man, YOU really know nothing about football.

Boy did you walk right into that one..........

Hey dumbass, have you ever seen a 4-3 flex defense play?

It is a gap responsibility defense. We play it.

You goofballs play a man zone hybrid of the 46.

The stats tell me that Seau is Waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy better than Bruschi in his 8 seasons.

And furthermore

Bruschi might have 4 more tackles than Seau this season but Seau has 2 more sacks and an Interception

Sorry to those that I re-posted

Stats , like those, for the most part are meaningless.

Unless players have games against ALL common opponents, it doesnt tell a true story.

While one may have more tackles, or sacks, or interceptions than the other, numbers do not tell you at what stage of games they were recorded, against what opponents, and at what time of the season, early when they may have meant something or late in seasons after your team is out of playoff contention.

There have been, for example, quarterbacks who have put up great yardage numbers but the numbers alone dont tell you how many of those yards were in "garbage" time when your team was trailing by 14 points or more and a defnese allows you to go upfield between the 20's.

I'm just using that as an example to show how NUMBERS and STATS alone really are meaningless when comparing players.

I would say at this stage of their careers, Bruschi does more, and means more to the Pats than Seau does to the Dolphins.

Man, YOU really know nothing about football.

Boy did you walk right into that one..........

Hey dumbass, have you ever seen a 4-3 flex defense play?

It is a gap responsibility defense. We play it.

You goofballs play a man zone hybrid of the 46.

That's it, schools out.

Wait who is say what positon Seymour would play on the Doplhins D-line. See people like to read posts and make what they want out of them. Maybe you should of ask were on the line?

He has just as much athelic ablity as Taylor to play on the end.

So stop with your "schools out" and "I know more than you about football" crap, how about you talk some football. I did not come hear name calling and now you are. Grow up!

Seymour with just as much athletic ability than Taylor?

you are kidding right?

Man, you pats fans really believe all that hype about your players.

As far as where he would play on our defense....well, Jason Taylor is Jason Taylor, and yeah, that other guy leads the NFL in sacks.

So where would you play him genius?

What does this have to do with Seau.
