Glen Coffee (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/9338/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/9338/news) was not present for practice on Thursday for the San Francisco 49ers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/sfo/) and he didnít show up at practice again this morning.

Now, there is a perfectly good explanation for his absence.
Coffee has decided to retire (http://twitter.com/MaioccoCSN/status/21084840105) from the NFL, according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area.
So much for that third-round draft pick. The 49ers selected Coffee in the third round from Alabama just a year ago. Coffee was expected to be the primary backup to starter Frank Gore (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7241/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/7241/news) this season. He was expected to have a role on special teams. Now, poof, heís vanished.
Coffee appeared in 14 games as a rookie for the 49ers and carried the ball 83 times. Now, rookie Anthony Dixon (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/24149/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/24149/news) could have an opportunity to become the No. 2 behind Gore. Otherwise, San Francisco might soon be in the market for a veteran backup just like the New Orleans Saints are (http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Saints-trolling-for-a-veteran-running-back.html).

The dude ripped it up last season in preseason, but when given the chacne to start when Gore went down, he looked out of his depth. Its a shock all the same.
