...overrated IMO, but any time a team loses a starter it sucks for them.

If anything he is underated..He is a good tackler and a good leader..Its def a pretty big blow..Remember the Jets love to bring pressure and blitz so the back end guys have to cover more man to man. You would assume next guy up is not as polished at that.

He is a liability in coverage though. He cannot defend well against taller receivers.

Patrick Turner apparently broke Jim Leonhard's shin in practice. NO I am not saying I am happy a player got injured. Obviously thats sucks for the poor guy, he is a heck of a player. BUT any time a starter goes down with an injury ESPECIALLY FOR THE JETS :d-day: its obviously good news for the opponents from a competitive advantage. But good luck to the guy with his recovery.

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2010/12/rex_ryan_jets_safety_jim_leonh.html

"Anyone that watched all the Jets games knows how important Leonhard is. Defensive play caller, huge impact player on special teams (his punt return set up Holmes TD catch in OT in Cleveland, for example). Huge loss for the Jets at this particular point of the season.
The special teams part can't be overlooked. He is a big contributor for them." - Tim Graham Chat

its def a loss but he isn't much better than average really. this is the type of loss that a team aspiring for a championship has to be able to overcome

Leonhard directed the secondary and knows the defense front to back. He is very replaceable from a physical standpoint, the issue will be how well they communicate without him.

lol......too bad the guy is mostly just an average safety. sucks we lost a starter but it isn't backbreaking or anything. losing jenkins was far far worse and our defense is still tops in the league. gotta love the thread celebrating a jets injury though.

yeah...this would have been worse last year when no one but leonhard and scott had been in ryan's system. this year it shouldn't be as big a deal. yeah it's a loss, but championship teams overcome losses like this one. the guy was completely mediocre in coverage.

This will definitely affect the Jets defense.

Our chances just got better.

Leonard was one of the leading tacklers when we faced them earlier this year.

Leonhard is third on the team with 66 tackles, and he has an interception and a fumble recovery this season, his second with New York. He played under Ryan with the Baltimore Ravens (http://www.nfl.com/teams/baltimoreravens/profile?team=BAL) in 2008, then followed the coach to New York.
"He's the commander in chief back there, gets everybody lined up and communicates all kinds of different things," Ihedigbo said of Leonhard. "He's looked at as the quarterback of the defense."

This makes it a liitle more serious than what you're saying.

Let's not celebrate injuries. Seriously thats disrespectfull esp. to a very classy player like Leonard. That being said it certainly does make that tough stretch they have coming up even more tough. Picture if Yeremiah Bell of last year went down in this year's scheme. I think that's the similar impact you are going to see.

Yeah, the players have the system down but there's still the task of reading the offense and making pre-snap calls based on formations. That was a big part of what Leonhard did and it seems like that will be Eric Smith's job now. He's one of the smartest guys on defense though so he may be up to the task.

I agree that it's a loss they should be able to overcome though, it just sucks in the short term, to lose a player mid-week and only have a couple of days to adjust.

this is the 1st step to the jets collapse.

LOL... I thought the first step was the Ravens loss?

first of all i dont go to gangreen so i don't care what goes on there. most of the time though when i see a post on a jets forum getting happy about an injury i always see othe rposters telling the poster who celebrated it that they are classless. i can see the same thing happening here, with some of the posters here calling this thread out as bush league. which it is. anyway whatever.......

You lost your leading solo tackler. The guy who gets to the ball 1st most of the time.
This will affect your defense and is definitely news.

so out of the 2 players who we had drafted in the past, one of them( Jason Allen) kills us and the other( Patrick Turner) helps us.

1 for 2 so far.

it's def news.....but trust me just looking at solo tackle stats doesn't tell the story. the guy is a decent safety, thats all. many jets fans would tell you that leonhard's position needed to be upgraded.

i dont think our upgrade is on the roster. unfortunately we are gonna just have to hope for smith and maybe one of the other db's to step in keep the status quo. smith is a bigger hitter than leonhard, but is probably slightly wor sein coverage (although he's made a big pass break up or 2 lately). then we might see lowery or wilson in there for coverage on more obvious passing downs. who knows we will just have to see what ryan does. either way it sucks to lose a starting player.
