KSL has learned that Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan and assistant coach Phil Johnson will resign at a press conference later Thursday.

More details will be posted as they become available.

The news comes after the Jazz lost to Chicago in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, where former Jazz players Kyle Korver and Ronnie Brewer helped the Bulls escape Utah with a 91-86 win.

After the game, Sloan didn't come out of his office for a postgame interview until about a half-hour after his team lost for the 10th time in 14 games.

The Hall of Famer, who usually talks to reporters about 10 minutes after the final buzzer, had been in a discussion with general manager Kevin O'Connor.

A person with knowledge of the situation tells CBSSports.com that Jerry Sloan is stepping down as head coach of the Utah Jazz.

The person also confirmed to CBSSports.com that longtime assistant Phil Johnson also will resign. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the resignations have not yet been formally announced.

Salt Lake City television station KSL first reported the pending resignations.

The team has scheduled a 3 p.m. news conference Thursday for what it called a significant announcement.

The 68-year-old Sloan is the longest-tenured head coach in any of the four major sports.

Probably the greatest . . . I think many teams are going to suffer from "Jerry Sloan" syndrome with the "Heatles" now in town. Utah couldn't get past Michael and Scottie, I don't expect anybody will get past Bosh, Bron and Wade . . . not 4 times in 7 games, I just can't see it.

Poor Jerry. Deron went and stole his offense and then stole his team.

Sucks to be a Jazz fan. Siding with Deron over Sloan is going to ruin that franchise.

Deron is 26 and the face of that franchise. Jerry is 68 and a relic. They made the only choice.

Ugly debut for the Jazz in their first game without Jerry Sloan. I was stunned to see them come out and literally demolish Phoenix in the first half. 12 point lead at half only to lose by 12 in the end.

Great win for the Suns, though... Keeps them in the thick of the playoff race. They're just 2 games back in the west.

This came as a real surprise to me. I'm more surprised about the timing of this than anything.

Jazz are now 0-2 in the post Jerry Sloan era.. Again, losing to Phoenix 102-101. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Jazz fall out of the playoffs, honestly. For the game tonight, they had only 9 dressed players. They need to get healthy in a hurry.
