6%2(1+2)

1+2= 3

6%2=.12

.12x3=.36

Correct?

Tunaphish429
04-29-2011, 12:49 PM
I have not clue how you got 1 or 9

Enlighten me

Tunaphish429
04-29-2011, 12:52 PM
IF you meant 6/2(1+2)

than it would be 9

1+2=3

6/2=3

3x3= 9

6/2(1+2)

was hoping people could infer it meant division... no division key on a keyboard... and I didn't want people to think 6/2 was an improper fraction

WeVie

Then I say the answer is 9

6/2 (3)

Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside parentheses.
Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

6/2 (1+2)

1+2=3
6/2=3
3(3)=9

The answer is 9

If your rule #1 is correct, which it is, the answer would be 1.

6/2 (1+2)
6/2 (3)
6/2 x(3)
6/6
1

I win

No, you add what is in parentheses first and then leave it alone. Next you work from left to right so you have to divide 6 by 2 next. You are trying to start in the middle

Arsenal WV
04-30-2011, 08:54 PM
On step #2 of the problem the 2 is still in parentheses, therefore you would still need to do that. Because it's the first step of PEMDAS. You would take the 3 which is in parentheses and multiply it by 2 that's part of the 6/2

6/2(1+2)

was hoping people could infer it meant division... no division key on a keyboard... and I didn't want people to think 6/2 was an improper fraction

LOL..I dont wanna be rude...cause you take alot of flack on these forums...

but yes 6/2 means divide..

if indeed it was 6 over 2 as a fraction...It would be the same thing..divison...Thats acutually how you get decimals / % from fractions...

Example. 1 over 2= 1/2 or one half..

1/2= .50, than you would cross multiple with 100% to get 50%

Now your problems states this 6%2.

Which means you take 6 % of the number 2

Which is .12

Now lets do an example of some simplier numbers to kind of check this...( I often do this cause its easy to get confused with %)

50% of 10 = 5...

Now ask yourself ...How did I Tunaphish429 come up of this answer?

Well turn 50% back into a fraction..Using cross multiplication I see that 50% = 1/2 or one half or 1 over 2..

So your taking half of 10 it equals five...

I am 26 years old..I will tell you I am no genius..I always liked numbers..But this was math that i learned in elementary school.. I barley graduated high school.. barley...

I hope this has helped you out.

Yeah it is. The 2 and 1 are both in ( ). After you solve the 2+1 it remains there, (3).

But the other 2 is not so you have to work your way from left to right. Are you just messing with us, trying to make us a little crazy?

Why isn't the answer one?

Don't you do the parenthesis first in the order of operations, then multiply, then divide?

NM, I looked it up. Apparently multiplication and division have equal priority in the order of operations...
