A Palm City man said saving his dog from the clutches of an alligator was something anybody would have done.
"Everybody's trying to make a big deal out of it," said Gary Murphy. "Anybody would have done it."
Murphy, 72, was working on a boat Thursday afternoon in a marsh area in Palm City. McDougal, Murphy's 11-year-old West Highland Terrier whom he calls Doogie, was by his side.

"He's my shadow. We should have named him shadow," said Murphy.
While working on the boat, Murphy said he heard his dog yelp.
"I (saw) Doogie in this gator's mouth," said Murphy.

Murphy said he didn't have time to think, so he just reacted.
"I immediately thought, 'Man, this gator's not getting my dog,'" said Murphy.
So he just jumped on the gator, landing on its head, Murphy said.

"Man, that gator's mouth (popped) open, and Doogie took off," said Murphy.
Murphy said he took Doogie to a veterinarian. He said Doogie has not eaten much since the attack.
"He's my buddy," said Murphy. "I can't make a move without him."
