Texting while walking will get you scrapes, cuts, sprains, even YouTube fame if you happen to fall into a fountain at the mall ... and starting next month, if you do it in Philadelphia, a $120 fine.

As part of the "Give Respect, Get Respect" program, which also targets sidewalk cyclists and drivers who "don't respect the bike lane," cops in the City of Brotherly Love will also ticket pedestrians who "text while they walk without looking ahead." Hundreds of warnings to oblivious bikers and drivers have been issued by the Philly Fuzz, who now turn their attention to text-destrians fouling the the sidewalks of the historic town.

Philadelphia isn't alone in its desire to see city sidewalks free of what more than a few big city residents feel are the Rudest People on the Planet. Two lawmakers in other states who sought to put an end to this habit that's as annoying as it is dangerous. Alas, they probably overstepped their boundaries by lumping cellphone use, iPods and earphones even with one ear free to their proposed bans.

That chick falling into the water fountain was hilarious. But a $120.00 fine? That's pure b.s.

I like to yell "BOO!" at oblivious oncoming morons who aren't watching where they're going.

After they jump, they look at you like it's your fault they weren't paying attn to where they were walking. :bobdole:

I do that occasionally here in VA. I'd run out of money quickly

It's a good thing I don't do that, or I'd be losing money considering where I live.

Just another mark against Philly. Some of the burbs are wonderful, but the city itself is nothing to write home about - miles of rundown slums, top 10 or so cities ranked by violent crime, a 3.5-4% wage tax for anyone who works in the city whether they live there or not. Great cheesesteak but even the Big2 are now overrated.

It's a shame that most of the major cities in the US have became this way.

This is ****ing stupid. Now we need to pay public workers to write tickets for people who walk and text! Does anyone else see the flaw in this? I mean just do what I do and bow up the shoulder and bounce the fool off the wall and move on. **** em' if they fall into a fountain, I mean did it real hurt the fountain?

This is some politicians attempt at added revenue and that is what it is.
