Small Hint: He was the head coach at Maryland at one point in his career.

It seems like I have stumped everyone so here is the answer:

In 1969 Paul "Bear" Bryant mulled a $1.7-million offer for five seasons to coach the Miami Dolphins. The money tempted Bryant, but he remained, saying he was secure financially and would never leave Alabama just for financial reasons

Didn't know about the Bear turning it down. But there's a second correct answer also:

"unlike Paterno, who turned down an offer from the Dolphins before Don Shula was named coach in 1970."

I have to disagree with that article. Paterno was offered a HC job, but not with the Dolphins. In 1973 he was offered the job by the Patriots. Living here in Pa. and being a PSU fan, I remember this story.

In 1973 the owner of the Boston Patriots, Bill Sullivan, offered Paterno $1.4 million a year plus a 5 percent ownership stake in the franchise to be its head coach. At the time, Paterno was making $35,000 a year at Penn State.
