WEST HARTFORD— — A Hartford man accused of secretly recording men in a Starbucks bathroom in West Hartford told police he hid cameras in three other restrooms in the area.

Paul Deveau, 51, of 100 Whitney St. said he has been hiding tiny cameras in bathrooms for about a year, according to an arrest warrant released Thursday.

The locations he mentioned, in addition to the Starbucks in West Hartford, were the Starbucks on Cottage Grove Road in Bloomfield, a gas station on Route 66 in Hebron and the Subway on Farmington Avenue in West Hartford, the warrant said.

Police said they checked those bathrooms and found no cameras.

Deveau did not mention the Cosi restaurant on Farmington Avenue in West Hartford, where a manager found a hidden camera after hearing reports of Deveau's arrest on Tuesday.

Deveau was charged with 12 counts of voyeurism after a patron of the West Hartford Starbucks found a miniature camera on the bottom of a sink in the coffee shop's men's room.

The state legislature passed a law making voyeurism a crime in 1999. In 2003, lawmakers strengthened the statute, boosting the penalty to a Class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison.

The law was inspired by a 1997 incident in which a Cheshire High School student secretly videotaped female friends undressing at pool parties.

According to the warrant for Deveau's arrest, a customer told a supervisor of the West Hartford Starbucks on July 28 that he had found the camera the day before. He gave the camera to the supervisor, who called the police.

The customer, an East Hartford resident, told police that about 1 p.m. July 27, he noticed there was no hot water in the men's room, so he checked the pipes to see if the hot water had been turned off. He saw the small camera taped to a pipe, pointed toward the toilet, he told police.

He removed the camera, brought it home and connected it to his computer, and found videos of men using the bathroom, the warrant says. He returned to Starbucks and turned it in the next day, it states. Police said there appears to be no link between Deveau and the customer.

The videos, which include sound, show 12 men using the bathroom, and clearly show the men's penises or buttocks, with some also showing their faces, the warrant says.

One video captures a man wearing a T-shirt with two sledge hammers on the front and adjusting the camera, police said. Starbucks employees identified the person as a customer they know as "Paul," a graphic designer at Hartford Hospital who has a dog named "Muffin."

When police went to Deveau's home, there was a small dog in the front yard, and Deveau was wearing a similar T-shirt, the warrant says.

Deveau, who allowed police to search computer equipment in his house, told officers that he planted the cameras because he enjoys looking at penises, and that he was sorry, the warrant says.

If he would have sneaked into the women's bathroom and put the cameras there, then he gets a pass.

100-1 odds that if that were the case, nobody would have ever heard of this case. The guy who found the camera & looked at the images wouldn't have turned it in. (though, he wouldn't have been in the ladies room to begin with - so ... :idk:)

He was an employee so he could have been in there cleaning the women's room but you are correct. He would have taken that home, and spanked the monkey to it.
