EL PASO, Texas - A woman shopping on a busy downtown El Paso street became the first victim of bullets flying across the border from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, on Tuesday when she was hit in the calf and wounded, authorities said. The 48-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, was pushing a stroller when she was struck. Gregg Allen, El Paso's chief of police, said the wound was caused by a "full metal jacket hard-nosed bullet" like those used in assault rifles.El Paso Mayor John Cook asked residents to remain calm, saying there is "no way to prevent incidents like this from happening" and the odds of getting hit by a stray bullet are minimal. Many people who were in the area at first didn't realize what had happened.http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57382328/el-paso-woman-hit-by-stray-bullet-from-mexico/?tag=stack

Pulled enough time there for both us in the last 25 years. And you're right, there ain't enough money on the planet to ever go there again.

How far can bullets travel anyway?

Juarez is right across the river (less than a football field) from El Paso and one of the more dangerous border towns. You can Google muzzle velocity of your favorite weapon and realize this was just a matter of time.

Lots of variables ... but the short answer is - miles.

For example, at a 45 degree angle/low wind/no obstructions in the way - my 30-30 will send a bullet (in theory) between 2 - 2.5 miles

I love El Paso.

I fell in love with a Mexican girl there once.

Yeah but you won't get injured (life threatening) by the round at that distance. Max effective range is what you really want to know.

M16 - 550 meters
AK47 - 400 meters

Most dangerous border towns? No, actually it has been dubbed as one of the most dangerous cities in the world bar none.

This isn't new folks. This time last year, there was an apartment complex in El Paso that got sprayed with bullets from an automatic weapon.

The river is the Rio Grande...and yeah, a football field is about right. It literally splits El Paso (Texas) from Jaurez (Mexico). And while its name means big river, it is long (Originates in the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado and pours into the Gulf of Mexico), nowhere along its entirety is it very wide.

Hey Chief?
Full Metal Jackets are used in a variety of weapons. I know it makes better press when you mention "Assault Rifles"...But...Have some integrity.

Drove through there once, didn't stop though. I spent some time in Las Cruces instead.

Wasn't too sad I didn't get to stop in.

We have those in Texas too. And it's flatter.
