Davy jones, the lead singer of beloved tv singing group the monkees, has died at age 66, authorities told tmz on wednesday.

The british 1960s pop idol passed away at martin memorial hospital in stuart, florida, an official confirmed to the site. The circumstances of his death are not yet known.

With his boyish handsome looks, charisma and musical talent, jones joined the monkees in 1965 alongside micky dolenz, michael nesmith and peter tork; the foursome was created by tv producers for a popular scripted sitcom about a rock 'n roll band.

Jones is survived by wife jessica and four daughters from previous relationships. The voice behind hits like "daydream believer," "last train to clarksville" and "i'm a believer" -- who also made a memorable cameo appearance on the brady bunch as himself -- performed as recently at feb. 19 in oklahoma.
