Did former Vice President Dick Cheney get special treatment when the 71-year-old got a heart transplant on Saturday? Doctors are saying it's unlikely the Republican septuagenarian was bumped ahead of thousands of younger people who were also in line to get a new heart. "You can't leapfrog the system," said Dr. Allen Taylor, cardiology chief at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. "It's a very regimented and fair process and heavily policed."More than 3,100 Americans are waiting now for a new heart, and about 330 die each year before one becomes available. When one does, doctors check to see who is a good match and in highest medical need. The heart is offered locally, then regionally and finally nationally until a match is made. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162-57404411-10391704/dick-cheneys-heart-transplant-at-71-spurs-age-debate/?tag=stack

Healthy or not, the average life-expectancy for a U.S. male is approximately 76 years old. Why would someone give a 71 year old a heart over, say, a 50 year old? It doesn't make sense, at least not to me. This has nothing to do with the recipient being Dick Cheney, either. Just being pragmatic about the whole thing...

My wife's father who was a great hard working man who did all he could to help others in need. Died of a heart attack and the young age of 39. While this bastard who has caused more harm in the world than good is still alive and kicking. Such is life. Like Billy Joel's song says "Only the good die young".

Cheney waited for a heart to become available. He had the surgery. He might live another 5-10 years if he is lucky.
Once Obamacare is up and running, a man his age would be allowed to die with no possibility of a transplant. Nice system.

I wish, for a single post, you could put the extreme partisan lunacy aside and just talk about a topic like a normal person...

The whole purpose of this post was partisan. Why else would Cheney's surgery be news here.
Lunacy? Normal? LOL...you paint like the Picaso of Partisanship.
Dude, chill out.
I will come here and post, whether you like it or not. I liked it better when you used to ignore me.

It had little to do with Cheney, and everything to do with the fact that a 71 year old man got a heart, and it took a public figure receiving it to spark the debate. You bringing up Obamacare is nothing but a poor attempt to derail this into something else...

Talking about Cheney's heart transplant in the "Political and War" forum was the wrong place to post a narrow debate over the merits of giving the elderly organ transplants. Nice way to smooth that over.
In light of the current supreme court's recent activity and media coverage regarding the Obamacare plan, it does belong in the discussion. The rationing of health care and organs for the elderly will not make sense in a government controlled socialist style system. The plan is bad and it should be discussed until it is gutted and repealed. I can understand young folks maybe seeing this differently. Wait until you are 50, your head will be turned completely around. Have a great day Locke.
