The Jets are reaching out to potential GM candidates, while exploring ways to keep current GM Mike Tannenbaum in a cap management role, according to league sources.

The Jets are trying to beef up their front office, particularly in personnel, given their failing in the draft and free agency in recent years. But owner Woody Johnson is looking for a way to keep Tannenbaum in a different capacity, primarily as a negotiator/cap guy, sources said. The team has quietly reached out to potential candidates to gauge interest in the bizarre arrangement, including approaching Mike Maccagnan, Houston's director of college scouting.

Several potential GM candidates -- men expected to garner interviews for soon-to-be-open general manager jobs -- said they would never consider taking the Jets job under these circumstances and doubted that any strong candidate would.

"That's totally ridiculous," one exec said. "Only the Jets."

I thought people would be lining up for this gig, with their qb situation and all that talent that just unfortunately got hurt this year, they should be primed for contention in 2013.....I mean who else has a butt fumbling qb that has led them all the way not to the Super Bowl 4 years ago??

Atleast the new GM will have job security sence he would need a new coaching staff, new QB, new WRs, etc. etc. That seems like atleast a 5 year rebuild.

Why would they want to keep Mike Tannenbaum in a cap management role especially after the contract he gave sanchez?

Funny no mention of keeping Rex because that would be an issue as well. No new GM in his right mind would keep the guy responsible for that clown show on the field.

That is good b/c we should keep Tannenbaum.

That is good b/c we should keep Tannenbaum. From my view, yes you should keep Tannenbaum, Rex, Sparano and Sanchez. Instead of battling the Bills for the cellar like this year you will most likely have the #1 pick in 2014.

Um, no way we should keep him, he made the decision on Tebow and it came back and bit him in the ass. Scrap it and start all over, its time for a much needed change.
