View Full Version : What blood type are you?

As some of you know, I work in a hospital lab. Part of my job is to determine a patient's blood type and prepare blood products for transfusion. Just want a sampling of blood types.

FYI:

O neg blood is the universal donor (That is, you can give O neg to anyone)

AB pos blood is the universal recipient (That is, you can give any blood type to a person with AB pos)

Exceptions do exist:

1) Bombay phenotype must receive bombay phenotype. This is very rare

2) Some people develop antibodies to red blood cell surface antigens and thus must be given antigen-negative blood

3) Blood supply sometimes necessitates giving Rh pos blood to Rh neg patient. Especially true for patients of advanced ages. (This is not an option for child bearing aged women as this would create the presence of an anti-D antibody that can cross thru the placenta into the fetus and destroy the RBC's in the fetus-----> Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn. Women who are Rh neg often receive Rhogam to counteract this)

On that note......

I'm a UPS man and I'd like to know which of the women here take delivery in the front AND rear.....

We have to be cautious because some women sunbathe nude in the backyard.

O neg, sucks to be me if I get in a car crash. other than my family, I know, of only one other O- person. Rarest if i remember correctly, somewhere around like 4% of the population, and I can only receive from other O-'s.

A+ and no Clump, you can't have any.

Only the RH- women on board have to worry about receiving Rhogam. (yes I worked in a womens health center....)

:( Give it to me

True, only Rh neg women get Rhogam. It's automatic if the father is Rh pos. If the blood type of the father is unknown, then it's given as well. There's a 72 hr window to receive it.

Talk about antibodies(Ab). I've been doing an Ab work up on a patient that's been in the hospital all frickin day with a low hemoglobin and NOW the doctor wants to transfuse ASAP. I'm not happy

I'm even more pissed

Patient is going to OR but the floor waits until the morning rush to tell me. Now I must do a panel & DAT. Somewhere in there I need to fit in all the CBC's & coag

I must vent because moron doctors and nurses irritate me
