On another thread in the Dolphin forum we are comparing what AJ is costing us vs What it would have cost to traded for Henson.I know Henson signed an 8 yr deal and Dallas gave up a 3rd for him but what about the cap implications

Henson seems to have a very cap friendly deal.

Henson gets $3.5M guaranteed
Friday, March 12, 2004
ESPN.com news services
Henson and the Cowboys agreed on an eight-year contract that will void to four years with modest playing time. In all eight years of the deal, the former New York Yankees third baseman will make a guaranteed minimum salary. In 2004, Henson's salary will be $238,000. (actually $230k)

Henson, however, is guaranteed at least $3.5 million over the next four years through a roster bonus that will trigger after any season in which he meets the predetermined playing time level. The Dallas Morning News reports that Henson will receive that bonus and void the last four years of the deal if he plays just 15 percent of the team's snaps in 2004. Henson's deal also has a $1 million escalator clause. The paper reports that clause will be triggered if Henson plays 70 percent of the team's snaps in any of his first three seasons.

Feeley's bonus was reportedly $3 million for five years (3/5=.6) and the base salaries are:
Feeley, A.J.

2004 455,000.00+600k=$1.055 million
2005 540,000.00+600k=$1.140 million
2006 3,500,000.00+600k=$4.100 million
2007 4,550,000.00+600k=$5.150 million
2008 5,600,000.00+600k=$6.200 million

As you can see Feeley is being paid as a backup QB for the first two years. Henson is being paid the rookie minimum for at least the first two years $230k and $305k. If he gets to play its a four year deal.

1. 2004 $230k

3. 2006 $385
4. 2007 $460 subtotal=$1.380 million

5. 2008 $545
6. 2009 $545
7. 2010 $545
8. 2011 $

These are the numbers per the NFLPA. The minimum salary chart has different minimums through the years 7-9. This is not unusual as the minimum salary goes up the player is paid accordingly. Ricky Williams contract was like this.

Guaranteed salaries are not paid all upfront like a signing bonus . If the player is cut or traded the money is payable and accelerated into the salary cap. If the final four years are voided there should be no payment or cap consequences of the final four years of salary.

The article is using the $545k salary for years 7 & 8 to total $3.5 million.
