If these guys got more details right, it would be easier to give them credibility:
In a memo to EA investors, Michael Pachter--a senior analyst with Wedbush Morgan--predicted that Sony will strive to avoid upsetting fans and retail stores by repeating the kinds of hardware shortages that marked the PS2's tumultuous 1999 launch, as well as the shortages that hurt its 2004 holiday season.
Pachter posits that Sony will try to chip into the Xbox 360's launch by dropping the PS2 to a mass market-friendly price of $99. If the Xbox 360 gets off to a slow start, Sony will ultimately hold off on launching the PS3 until 2007. But if the Xbox 360 racks up major sales, Sony will be compelled to rush production of the PS3 to slow the Xbox 360's lead.
First, the PS2 launched in 2000, not 1999. The hardware shortage was actually a good thing, as people spent $660-$700 or more on Ebay to get one. The hype was incredible.
I would fully expect Sony to drop the PS2 to $99 this Holiday season, but if they hold off on the PS3 to 2007? Even if it is early 2007 when they release it? That gives MS Holiday 2005 and 2006 to gain a HUGE lead in sales.
The very casual gamers who would buy a $99 PS2 are NOT the ones who would spend $299 on an Xbox 360, so it won't do much to slow sales.
Sony will launch in Japan in the middle of 2006, then Europe and North America Holiday 2006. I don't believe Sony when it talks about a Spring 2006 launch though. They won't have games ready, but are just trying to get people to wait a few months -that will become a year-long wait for most.
