The Portishead thread got me thinking about a fascinating search engine I found a while back. It's called LivePlasma (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.), and while it includes movies, I like it most when researching music.
The concept is this: you enter a band name, and LivePlasma plots the band in the musical universe. Similar bands are listed in proximity to the band you entered, as if in orbit. You see, each band is represented by a sphere, and the size of the sphere represents how "major" the band's influence is.
It's a great tool. Check it out.
