I guess to put it in the simplest terms it is basically the movement from one color to another, like the slow change. Instead of wel here gimme about 5 mins and ill post examples of some simple gradients. Kinda like changing from one color to another but them blending in the middle and gradually changing from one to another instead of an immidiate change.

If you want to try something really neat with gradients for backgrounds, select what you want your gradients to look like(the colors) then under i think it is type(idk wherever it says normal on the top toolbar) and change it to difference. Now just start going crazy on the background clicking and dragging as much as you want, and just keep going until you get something u like. here so u cna see:
An aurora borealis type look that can be masked over a picture etc:

These were all rushed so I wasn't trying to make a good background but I jsut wanted to show some fast examples.
