What the hell are those buildings that are on stilts in the water? I always see them in TV shows or movies set in Miami, like CSI: Miami for example, and they had them in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (aka GTA: Miami). So what are they? I have wondered that for YEARS and I just always forget to look it up.

It's called Stiltsville.
A unique little community built in the channels off of Key Biscayne.
Very historic.
Hurricanes have decimated it over the years and as far as I know they aren't able to get insurance coverage anymore. Still since it's so unique and historic many want to preserve the little community.

THANK YOU! That was bothering me for SO long . I always wondered if they were houses, because they LOOK like houses, but then I was thinking they might not be just because I have only ever seen one or two of them, and because I figured they'd be SUPER exposed to Hurricanes and nobody would live in them.

No problem bro.
It's a cool spot and it's in an area that's great for a little relaxing diving and fishning as their are many coral fingers in the area as well. When I lived in Miami I'd head out that way with my boat all the time.
Here's a good story on it I found complete with it's history.

Yeah it is (or was) a small community off-shore.

Stiltsville is great. We used to have awesome parties there when we were in high school. :D
I really hope they don't tear them down.
