audio skipping on ps2 disk

my son bought ultimate spider-man brand new last year and played for about 2 hours. it has been untouched since. he went to play it today and the background music constantly skips and gameplay occasionally skips. does anyone know what might cause this and or how to fix? game is brand new. he also recently put a scarface skin on the ps2 and i have read on other forums that the adhesives can cause problems with the system, dont know if this is true or not.

i found the problem, i took the ps2 apart and cleaned the laser with a qtip and alcohol. spider-man is working and all games load times are a lot faster. also the disappearing buildings, roads and backround scenery ,common in a lot of games, is no longer happening. i also gave a good cleaning to the entire interior.the ps2 is over 5 years old so it was due.
