Although Obama may have played a part in a few artists changing their subject matter, I think too much credit is being given to him for the shift in the genre. As big homie Common said himself, the change was happening before his presidency. Common himself has been the antithesis of the general view of Gangsta Rap for a lot longer than the country has even known who Obama was/is.
