Everyone knows that the history of this FO is to select LB and Trench players in the first round. I want to look at some of the positions we could select outside of those and why or why not we would pull the trigger.
Many people believe NT makes the most sense to be our choice at 1(12). Not a sexy pick but one that the 3/4 needs to be as effective as possible. Looking at our FO's history they do not normally take a NT in the early rounds of a draft and have had excellent success when drafting NT's later on.
D.Williams NT: I don't view D.Williams to be a special talent at NT and I don't believe he's not much different then C.Thomas who could be had in the 2nd, L.Joesph (3rd or later) or if T.Cody fell to us in the 2nd. So the only way I see a NT getting selected here would be if one came in as a great prospect like Suh is at DT and certainly D.Williams is not that therefore doesn't give the FO enough reason to change their ways.
WR, another position the FO historically likes to take later on and has had a good amount of success doing so.
D.Bryant WR: Dez is a special talent that has some debateable issues off the field. Dez is easily the best WR in the draft talent wise, a top ten talent that justifies BPA at 12. He could very well be a number 1 receiver that makes an impact right away thrusting our offense into high gear. Thus allowing the FO to go outside their comfort zone and select a WR at 12 overall.
RB, another position the FO historically likes to take later on and again has good success doing so.
CJ.Spiller RB/KR: CJ like Dez brings a big impact right away to our team, he's not only a big play specialist as a RB but also a top notch return man. CJ brings 21 TD's of 50 or more yards which is an unreal stat and not something any mid round pick could ever bring to the table. Let's not forget that BP's favourite position while coaching was the return man in which he would personally spend time coaching them up. CJ's selection would give us a big back, a return specialist and the ability to trade R.Brown bringing even more talent aboard from this draft.
E.Berry/E.Thomas FS: I like many others believe if Berry falls then there is no debate on who gets selected at 12. Berry may very well be the best FS prospect to come along in a very long time. If E.Thomas is still available he too brings a special talent to any team that is lucky enough to grab him and Jacksonville may very well do that right in front of us. The question I have about FS is, is the drop off from E.Thomas to the next group of FS's that big to justify selecting him at 12? If not then waiting for N.Allen etc...in the 2nd or later makes more sense but if the FO feels there is too big of a difference then E.Thomas becomes a real choice at 12.
So in conclusion I think NT isn't even on the radar of potential 1st round picks. I do believe because Dez, CJ and Thomas are very special players that they jump to the top of our big board where their positional value normally would be much lower. CJ becomes the 1st choice of the three if we have a trade with Ronnie in our back pocket. Otherwise Dez is the guy because I don't see the FO picking CJ without a pre-draft agreement to trade Ronnie because it would really lower his trade value. Thomas is the third choice if the two of them are gone.
1. CJ.Spiller RB/KR-only if Ronnie is traded and if not becomes #2.
2. D.Bryant WR-could change as noted above.
3. E.Thomas FS
I don't see any other players with enough talent to justify being selected at 12 ahead of these 3 guys (4 but I really can't justify adding Berry because it would be a miracle for him to fall). Even though selecting a LB has a strong history with this FO I really am not convinced that there are any great enough this year to be selected ahead of these 3 outside of a trade back.
