Brigham Young University will leave the Mountain West Conference, go independent in football and rejoin the Western Athletic Conference in all non-football sports beginning in the fall of 2011, The Salt Lake Tribune confirmed Wednesday morning.
According to a source in the WAC office, BYU will seek final approval for the moves from its owner, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, either today or Thursday. Pending approval, a press conference is planned for early next week. But because of media reports that broke late Tuesday night, that timetable may change.
“In light of the media leaks, it may be expedited a bit,” the source told The Tribune.

LOL @ Boise.... they can't win for losing it seems. They leave a bad conference for one that turns out to be even worse with all the defections...
But I do think Boise can reneg on their MWC deal with no penalty if they choose... I just don't see what sense this makes for BYU... I'm not sure what kind of deal they would be able to negotiate for themselves with the BCS as an independent..
BYU: "We would like to be treated just like Notre Dame... if we win 9 games, we're automatically eligible for a BCS game".
BCS: "Well, we're not sure your program deserves any BCS money as an independent.... aren't most of your players eligible for social security benefits anyway"?

As soon as I saw the headline I said "BYU wants to be the Notre Dame of the west". I guess I was right.
I'm very anxious to hear JohnBeckHOF's take on this.

This is a problem for Boise... they left the WAC for the MWC to get the hell away from these teams... now they'll be in a conference with them again...
The deal BYU is proposing to the BCS is rather weak too.... the WAC is saying that BYU must schedule 6 WAC teams every year as part of the deal to let their other sports join the conference...
They better play a HELL OF A SCHEDULE with the remaining 6 games in order for their automatic bid to be worth even considering.... they need to be scheduling Big-10/Pac-10, etc. teams like Notre Dame does... Or in BYU's case, Big-12/Pac-10 teams make more sense...

The SLC media are BYU apologists. When the U of Utah moved up to the PAC, consensus was they were greedy. Now, BYU makes a move and its economically prudent?
BYU made this move out of jealousy, inferiority, & arrogance no more no less. BYU in all their wisdom (I mean ego) has possibly caused the demise of 2 conferences all because they think they deserve a deal like UT-Austin got.

FWIW; There have been columns in the San Diego, Denver, Ft Worth, earlier today Laramie, Wyoming papers blasting BYU for their arrogance.
You keep hearing about how BYU has a national fan base. Other than Utah, SE Idaho, small parts of the Phoenix & LA, its very few and incredibly far between.
They better play a HELL OF A SCHEDULE
A local AM station was saying that they can get 5 to 6 games a year easy if they are independent. But, they will be hard pressed to get another 6 to 7 games a year and thats before we know how the conference schedules will be for the new PAC & conference w/ Texas and thier lackeys will breakown.
Damn Mormons.
For the record, There is very little demographic difference in the makeup of students, athletes, factulty, & fans of Utah, BYU, & even Utah St. Psychologically is another story.
Kiffin & Neuheisel on ESPN last month seemed to like the additions of Utah and Coloarado but I'd welcome the actual opinions of Phins fans in the PAC... just PM me.

BYU would do great being an Independant for football. It's a no-brainer of a move

I think the move towards independence is foolish. That conference is going to be a lot stronger with Boise State, Nevada, and Fresno State. They should've stuck around.

Thanks. I'll root for UA occasionally. The Cats beating BYU in the 2008 Vegas Bowl was hilarious! I consider myself a fan of Utah 1st, the SEC (Both Tigers especially) 2nd , & The PAC (UA & both Oregon schools) 3rd.
There is a great deal of delusion here along the Wasatch Front (SLC, Provo, Ogden). Fans of BYU think the upcoming contests w/ Texas are the tip of the iceberg. With the way the schedules for the Longhorn Conference and new PAC are shaping up, I don't think they will have much room for BYU. Further, The Cougars have burned alot of bridges with other teams in the west.
The Mtn West had a decent deal with them but in all their brillance decided to have their own network on Comcast. Its not bad but there is alot of whining by those who have DirecTV, etc...
As for BYU's deal w/ ESPN? There is no way the network in Bristol, CT will bump the SEC, ACC, & Big 10 from Thursday and Saturday telecasts. BYU is looking at alot of Friday games against C-USA & MAC teams IMO.

Well, if that's the case I hope it was worth it to BYU.
