My comment was tongue-in-cheek, -- as a lot of friends here know, I attended one of the Florida public universities (USF) for a couple years. In fact, I was a paid lobbyist for Florida Student Association in Tallahassee for one year.
I really don't know what the requirements are for each of these schools. Checking in Barron's College profiles or the annual college editions put out by magazines like U.S. News and World Report would be the right sources to check in.

TT should know the requirements for UCF. I remember my teacher telling me a site where you can go and find out their requirements but I can't remember it.

I'm going into my senior year and I'm applying to one school in Florida (University of Miami). I got a 1260 on my SAT, have good grades (I didn't do that well in 9th grade though), take hard classes (I take some APs and I started HS math in 8th grade so I'm taking Calculus next year when most take Pre-Calculus) and with all of that I'm not that confident that I will get into UM. Miami used to be really easy to get into but getting in has gotten a lot harder in the past few years. Miami and UF are the two hardest colleges in Florida to get into. UF is the cheaper of the two because it is public, Miami is very expensive because it is private but they are good on financial aid which I am definitely applying for. You should buy a guidebook like the Fiske Guide which covers a lot of colleges including UF, FSU, and Miami. You can also go to princetonreview.com and they have information about a lot of colleges. The two most important things are your grades (this includes the difficulty of your classes) and SAT scores. However, there are also other things that are considered, such as community service, teacher recommendations and school activities. Some schools require an essay as well, I know Miami requires one but I'm not sure about the rest. You also need to keep in mind that since you are out of state it will be harder for you to get into any Florida public schools than it would be if you were a Florida resident. I'm applying to a bunch of out of state public schools but none of the public schools in Florida really interest me.

You know what's funny.
Last night I was telling my nephew that the only school I would allow him to attend and play Football is Miami. He is a very talented athlete though he's GREAT in Football (fullback, won the MVP last season) he's much better in Baseball (though he hates it for some reason now). I was telling him he has to pick up his grades no matter how good he is on the field....blah blah blah.... He's 12. No pressure. ![]()

Any of these schools will cost you an arm and a leg.....Miami obviously more...if only you could get residency here you could cut your tuition costs in a third for any public university in Florida (Miami not being one of them)
Anyways...i dont have an exact # for you as far as SAT/ACT score or GPA is concerned, but UCF and Miami are probably similar for undergraduate studies....when I applied to UCF a few years ago I believe you had to have just a 3.0, that has changed now as UCF's enrollment has climbed to 45,000!!!! (UF's last year was 46k), When UF's enrollment started to skyrocket it put a clamp down on its requirements and UF right now is trying to become the UNC of the region. UF without a doubt is the toughest school to get into, public or private..... Florida State, USF are relatively easy to get into (probably a 3.0, if you crack a 1000 SAT score you probably could go to USF, but dont go there, its a sh!thole)...FSU is on its way down academically.... For an education, id narrow it down to three choices in the state #1 - UF (if you can get in), #2 UCF or Miami.... UF's requirements are probably over 1200 easily SAT with at least a 3.5 or 3.6 (unweighted) GPA UCF's are probably 1100 with a 3.0-3.2 unweighted FSU - probably 1100 with a 3.0 unweighted or higher USF - 900-1000 with a 3.0 WEIGHTED Miami - 11-1200 with a 3.2-3.4 unweighted Those are my best guesses....

Then I may have to go to USF and not UCF like I wanted. Oh well I still have a couple years to go.

Miami and UF are probably some of the hardest schools to get in, in the nation. Things haved changed. Miami and UF require well above a 3.6 cum gpa and about a 1200+ on the SAT's and thats being generous, it is very tough to get into UM and UF. I just graduated this year and alot of my friends got turned down and they had 3.7gpa 1130 sat etc. it is tough to get in. UCF you can get in with a 3.0 and a 1100+ or something around there and it is a good school. USF I'm not sure but it shouldn't be to hard either. FIU you just need a 2.0+ and a 1000+ on the SAT and it is a pretty good school, I'm going there now and it has surprised me. If you know what you want to major in go ahead and look around and see which schools are rated hire in that major, etc. For example I know FIU has one of the better Hospitality Management programs in the nation as well as one of the best Occupational Therapy programs in the nation. |

UCF arguably has the #1 hospitality program in the country.....that is considered one of UCF's strongest programs as well
The Rosen School of Hospitality isnt even on the main campus, its in the Disney side of Orlando, the BIGGEST tourism site worldwide on the East coast....

A Florida resident would not be best to answer this question for you. With the exception of UM the rest are state schools. State schools have much differint requirements for non rasidents than residents, and only a certain amount of number of non residents than can let in every year, so the qualifications could change every year depending on the number of applicants. Your best bet would be to look at certain scholarships these schools offer, and what is required to obtain them, and work your *** off to get it. If not pick a communiy college down here, and get your associates down here, while gaining your residency. It would be a hell of a lot cheaper, and your diploma wouldn't have any mention of the comm. college.

Here are Miami's admission stats:
http://www.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Mai...0649-2,00.html They only accept 44% of the applicants and the midrange SAT scores are 1200-1360. Also the average weighted GPA is 4.0. The school is pretty hard to get into. I'm hoping that I get in and get some financial aid so I can go there but I know there is a good chance that I won't get in since admission standards have gone up a lot at UM in the past few years. |
