For anyone interested in the Civil war (Shenandoah Valley)

The Shenandoah Valley Battlefield Foundation just came out with a CD driving tour that takes you throughout the area talking about the history of Stonewalls 1862 Valley campaign. All proceeds go back into the organization and are put forth to preserving history and educating the public. If your interested and would like more information, contact Nancy Hess at n134h@aol.com.

Or if you would like more information just on the history or the organization, visit:

By blood I'm not a 'civil war buff' but my parents are. My dad's vice president of the organization and we own the Widow Pence House in Cross Keys/Goodsmill. We've had a lot of people visit and stay at that house... govenors, congressmen, ect. Just this past winter the owner of UPS came and stayed for a week... (I didn't realize that their last name is Brown, hence the color).

Just this past summer we had the first ever reinactment for the 1862 campaign throughout the area. They're hoping to make it a semi-annual thing. We had just over 900 reinactors show up from California all the way to Maine. It's been a pretty cool experience...

Also, if anyone's planning on coming in the area, they (my parents Irvin and Nancy) would be happy to show you around the area I'm sure...

would probably be my dad's dream. He has read literally every word printed about that war. Unfortunately the apple fell so far from the tree, that they think I may be a pear!

That's a beautiful area, NewEra. My brother went to Bridgewater. Do they still have the spots for the horses (for Mennonite transportation) at the grocery stores?

I know the feeling... I'm guessing I'll grow into it as I get older. But as for now, I'm more interested in modern history (WWII and such)

Same here. I'm partial to WWII british naval stories for leisure. American Business History was the last time I studied any of it. But I fully understand those passionate about it. Certainly interesting to know how things came to be.

I'm going to pass along this information to pops, thanks!

I think you are a peach Wade....

most excellent 8, it must be very interesting growing up in that environment. I've been to the "Dade" reenactment a couple of times, but that was an Indian massacre, not Civil war. Florida did not have any serious battles, the Olustee battle is generally the only one known, even to historian types. I put together a chronological time line of Maritime action in Florida(90 pages), as this does have great interest to me. I am an authority on post bellum southeast Florida. I have some documents and pay records that suggest my ggGrandfather was promoted to 1st Lieu. and given a company in the "new" USCI...the US Colored Infantry and fought around Chatanooga. We still have my Uncles Civil War Bugle in the family.

I'm sure my parents would love to hear that. They travel all over the place to interview people on the family history and such, just to get it on written record.

Yeah, the whole area is just sprouting up everywhere. It's unbelievable to say the least. Bridgewater College itself is growing considerably. They have added apartment style dorms, a new gym and workout facility, and numerous other projects underway. I went there for my first year of college, but I just couldn't get into the whole liberal college environment. My father went there before he went on the med. school so it was one of those things where you try to do it for them, ya know?

Yes, I know. My parents handpicked that college for him because though he is quite smart, when younger, he tended to be a bit wayward in his attention to his studies. He just spent his time partying at JMU anyway Regardless, he still has many positive contacts which he made at Bridgewater and in the area. And as long as he graduated, my parents were happy.

There was a General John Greaton, Revolutionary War General. Friend to George Washington. Until recently we claimed direct lineage. Of course we find out we are most likely not descendents. We are still staking claim though
