New Computer

So I am finally back in busines with a computer. I got everything Friday, and finally got a copy of XP Sat night. It isn't close being fully functional yet, but I am back online. the best thing about my new comp is what happend when I opened the final package i was waiting for from a web site that will remain nameless. It was to include my graphics card(geforce fx5600), CPU(AMD 2600+), and 2 sticks of Geil ddr 3200 256mb memory. The first 2 I got. The memory was a diffirent story. I got memory, but what happend to be in the box was 2 sticks of Geil DDR 3500 512 mb. That made my day. I still need to unlock the chip, so I can run the memory at 400fsb instead of 333. The chip is also running at 2.08 right now when it should be at 2.13, but that will be fixed soon. No matter how you cut it this is light years beyond the Compaq I had.

I put a system together yesterday too. It was the 800 FSB machine. Boy this thing is nice. Got 2000 on it. Memory's running at CAS 2 w/ no problem (most new Springdale-based boards don't like it yet). I'd love to overclock this thing. It's begging me to. Great user manual to boot (I'm big on this). There's even a section called "Overclocking". I'm liking Albatron very much right now. It only has a 9100 in it, since it's not a gaming machine. But man does it work fast. I'm gonna try and see what it can do today.

This thing is pissing me off! It is tripping all over itself. I can't say any one thing is wrong with it, but there are alot of inconsistentcies daily. I had to put the mother board driver disk in 3 times before everything worked on it. I try to download programs, and durring the install the computer restarts. I did a disk cleanup today, and it siad it couldn't finish unless I put the XP pro disk again. I guess I will have to reload XP and cross my fingers.

Do you get any blue screens?? When it restarts, jump in the BIOS right away and look at the temps. What CPU temps are you getting?? Are you overclocked?? What motherboard are you using?? What kind of fan?? When you tried to install the MB drivers, did they appear to "take" each time??

Try going back to the default settings and see if it works like that. If it does then you have to go step by step to see how far you are going to be able to over clock the thing.

Each PC is different.

I havent overclocked it yet. It is actully underacheiving. The board has a 400fsb, and it is only at 3333. The proscessor can run at 2.13 and it is at 2.08.

No blue screens. The temp is 118, and the fan is running at 4000 rpms. That is hot isn't it for not overclocking. I only have one fan, but the case also has an exhaust fan running about an inch away from the heat sink.

I just tried to get 3dmark and it wouldn't run throught the set up. It is really pissing me off. The CD/DVD rom only reads some disks. I can't even get a hold of my freind that has the XP disk.

The 2600 at 333 FSB should run at 2.083 (12.5 multiplier). The 266 model runs at 2.133 (16 multiplier).

Those temps seem ok. Did you have any problems during OS install?? Any "file(s) cannot be copied"?? Try using only one stick of RAM at a time. Use one.....see what happens....then remove it and replace with the other.

What motherboard are you using?? Do you have the latest BIOS version?? And this is 3200 or 3500 memory?? Do you have any other RAM available (2100/2700)??

I had trouble installing XP the first 2 times, but then I took out one of my mem sticks, and it installed fine. I remembered hearing that on dual channel ddr mother boards that alot of people had to install xp with only one stick in.

It is nforce 2 ultra 400 moboard, and I am running 2 sticks of ddr 3500 at 512 mb. The only time I have had trouble installing something is the moboard drivers. It comes to the onboard sound card drivers and sais that it has detected a problem, but I hit continue. I also had a hell of a time installing the drivers for my vid card. I think i got the same message, and I actully installed 2 sets of drivers unsucsessfully for it, untill I just went to nvidia.com and got the drivers, but I don't think they installed perfectly. It wouldn't load the vid card drivers from the disk.

I'm thinking you have a bad setting for the memory in the BIOS or you have a bad memory stick.

You should be able to run/install XP with in Dual Channel mode. In the BIOS, what is the CAS latency set to?? If it's a 2, try setting it to 2.5. Also, since we know that one stick of memory is good.....what happens when you only use that stick and remove the other?? Do the drivers install properly (make sure to uninstall them first before reinstalling)??

Compounding matters is the fact that the nForce 2 board has two memory controllers. It is possible that one of them is flaky (and not the RAM). This is less likely, but it's still possible. So I'm throwing it out there just in case.

Whatever happens....whatever turns out to be the culprit....you'll have gained valuable experience. Yeah, it's a pain in the ***. But this is how you learn. Just trying to look at the bright side.

I took out the memory and tried to boot with one in at a time. The one that was originally the first memory port booted fine. When I put the other stick in the same port i was brought to a blue screen when I attemped to boot.

So this sucks! I can't send it back to the web page because they sent me more memory than they were supposed to. To refresh i ordered 2 256mb sticks of ddr 3200, but they sent 2 sticks of 512mb ddr3500. Do you think I can send it back to Geil?

To fix the problems that I am having do I have to reinstall windows or just delete everything I put on the computer since putting in the bad stick, and then reinstall all the drivers?

I would start all over, a fresh format. And I wouldn't be greedy about the mistake they made with the memory. nForce and nForce2 Mobo's run the best when they have 2 memory sticks to operate with. So you may want to send those two 512's back and get your original order of two 256's. Seeing as how you do not have two 512's anymore.

Wait till one of these days your PC stops working because of an IDE cable. If you thought this was fun!

Good luck, I hope all those troubles are gone.

you'll love XP, you can run your old 95 progams on it.
one program you're gonna have to get is norton works 2003. cleans out programs you don't use anymore, fixes errors and has a virus protection. i got a norton firewall too. with XP your gonna need something to block all the popups you're gonna get and the norton firewall has one built in.
with the norton works you can set up a maintenance program and run it when you're sleeping.
you can optimize your disk too. all the most used programs are automatically moved to the outside edge of your disk so your pc will run faster!
