Barry SandersSo I seen on ESPN that the Lions were trying to con Barry out of retirement yet again. They have tried every year since he retired. I am sure he will not come back but man oh man I would love to see him play another year or two.
Because to me he is the greatest ever just as Dan Marino is!

Re: Barry SandersQuote:
It was a shame Barry cut his career short, but the bigger shame is that he played his whole career with the Lions. Yes Dan never won the big one, but he had 1 chance and was in countless playoff games, and memorable battles. Barry got what 2 playoff games, and thanksgiven for the whole NFL world to marvell at his skills. It was a shame, and an injustice that Barry never got to play for a contender.

Jim Brown is more like Ricky W 2002 - big and fast
I too cannot find a compable RB to Barry. Payton, Emmitt and a few other were lunch pail guys who built up great careers thru hard work without being "spectacular" OJ was truly a spectacular runner, but maybe Gale Sayers was closer to Barry's style, but Sayers is before my time though. I am still not a great Barry fan - maybe it is the Lion's fault - but he seemed to someone who needed lots of 1 yard gains to get his unbelievable runs in. So you would watch a game and see him get stuffed over and over and then break a few and he would have his 100+, but his team would have too many 3 and outs waiting for the big one. Statistically, no one compares to Brown |

Statisticly Barry does compare to Brown. They are the only 2 RB in the top 5 of yardage that averaged 5 yards a carry.
Alot of people say he had so many 1 yard gains, but then broke 1 for 50. This is true, but so many of Barry's best runs were just to get back to the line. The Lions spread out the feild with the run and shoot, but defenses didn't give it any respect. Barry still had to sift thru 8 man fronts with no TE or FB. If the Lions would have found a QB in one of their many attempts Barry probably would have broken Walter's record in just the 10 seasons he played.

I grew up in the same town as Barry Sanders (Wichita, Ks.). It seemed forever ago now, but the following is something that I witnessed in person. My brother was two years older than me and is Barrys age. They were seniors and I was a lowly freshman. There was a party at a friend of my brothers and I begged him to take me with him. He finally relented and told me that I could go but I had to stay outside the house and stay out of trouble.
At the party a guy pulls up in a wide hooded Caddy. He gets out and starts talking to the people in the front yard. Then up walks Barry Sanders. Realize, this was back when he was just barry not BARRY. The guy with the Caddy starts talking smack to Barry and telling him that he's heard that he can jump far and run fast and he doesnt believe the stories...ect... So the guy slaps a $20 bill on the hood of his Caddy and bets Barry that he cant jump over the hood of the car. Barry didnt want to take the bet and told the guy no. The guy kept prodding and egging and talking smack. So Barry took the bet. He walked up the Caddy and squated down to the ground and did a standing broad jump from the curb, over the Caddys hood and landed on both feet in the street. Like a freaking cat! He walked around the car and picked up the $20 laughing, handed it to the guy he won it from and asked him to go buy some beer for the party. I would not have believed it then unless I saw it.

Barry is the best I have ever seen. Having not seen Jim Brown I hold comment about him. People Marvel how Vick can get away from tacklers and make something out of nothing. Barry was oding it way before Vick and had to be voted most frustrating player to pursue. He should also be voted most rewarding tackle to make as he just alluded everyone and anything. His reaction speed was nothign short of superhuman and it is a shame he left without garnering the highest honor for a runningback in the all time rushing title. Emmit Smith should send a thankyou card or five to Barry for allowing Emmit the chance to break it.
Part of Barry's mystique is that he did walk away, that he really didn't care about records and just wanted to win. P.S. Most rewarding sack has to go to Dan. His quick release prevented may from padding their stats with his torso. Plus he had that beautiful little sidestep towards the end of his career that had to fluster defender who thought they had a lock on him. Brings a smile to my face just thinking about these too. |

I love to watch highlight films of him run it justs a amazes me, the things he can do with his body seem almost unhuman... I wish he kept playing cause i would rather have seen him win the rushing title then Emmitt Smith.
Click this to help me out if you can its a game.....http://www.outwar.com/page.php?x=371021 ![]()

If anyone can find a link to the highlight of Barry shaking off all 11 Bears for a 50 yard td I would love to watch it. That could be the single greatest run of all time.
