40 times don't mean crap. Devin Hester ran a 4.4 at the combine but when he puts the pads on he is in a different league. If your talking about pure straight line speed from endzone to endzone in pads, Ted Ginn is the fastest... Basically he has the fastest game speed I've ever seen. Just go to youtube and watch his break away speed. He may have been faster before his foot injury, but that kick return against the Bills last year reassured me that he still has "long speed". But if you do want to talk 40 times, Ted Ginn ran a 4.22 40 before the National Championship game against Florida... Go to youtube and watch the video where he is training with the Speed and Stregnth guys. He said in person that he ran a 4.22.

Also, the difference between someone who runs a 4.2 and a 4.4 is about 2 yards after the 40. So it's not that big of a difference. Now watch Ted Ginn run after 40 yards and that seperation ends up being 15 to 20 yards. Which tells me he can maintain his top end speed better than anyone.

I was just watching the replay of the game on NFL Network and the Miami commentators were talking about how Anthony Armstrong ran a 4.16 40 yard dash. Did anyone else hear this?

In my opinion the fastest football player was hershal Walker who once held the world record in the 50 yard dash.

The fastest time ever at the NFL combine since they started using semi-electric timing (which isn' t a completely accurate timing method) was Chris Johnson this year, 4.24. Before that it was Fabian Washington who ran something like a 4.25/4.29 depending on the source.
And the older times are especially inaccurate because they didn't even have partially electric timing back then so when you here about Bo Jackson's 4.1, Herschel Walker 4.2, etc just remember those times aren't even close to as accurate as what they use now-a-days because they were all hand-timed. In track they usually add .24 seconds to anytime hand-timed race to account for the delay it takes for human reaction when using a stopwatch. The NFL combine started using partially electric timing back in 1999, so you can't consider anything before that reliable.

Im pretty sure u can conclude that Hershal Walker would have posted one of the best 40 times ever since he held the world record in the 50 yard dash at one point.

nothing official about those times. Nobody can run a 4.09 in reality. Ginn runs about a 4.3 period. Ginn has never ran that speed with an electronic timing which is the most accurate.

The 40 is pretty irrelevant. I never look too much into it, get excited about guys with 4.2 speed! There are plenty of examples of guys who run great 40's who cant play, and plenty of guys who are the opposite, who when they're on the field on Sunday's are faster stronger and better than their combine numbers ever could indicate. Guys like Emmitt Smith.

I would like some verification of this and what event? His 110 hurdles is on the list of fastest times but is not the fastest in high school and he does not even appear on the list of 100 meter times in high school. Johnathon Wade does though. You have to earn a birth on the olympic team and not sure that Ginn is fast enough but maybe as a hurdler if had worked he could have made it. here are the recordshttp://www.trackandfieldnews.com/lists/all_time/prepout_at_m.html
