There are a million reasons why Henne shouldnt be backup. For the most part Henne has been OK in camp. He along with the other QB's have struggled against the 1st team Defense. He is also young and no reason to throw him in the fire right away. That can lead to the same thing Beck has been going thru. Especially when there isnt a whole lot of talent on this team. This team is going to suck this year and whomever is running QB is going to struggle. The last thing Henne needs is to struggle a couple of games and everyone in Miami calling for a new QB.

nice post phinstigator, i'm real curious how things shake out over the next couple days, meaning this game in particular, also the next 2 weeks. as far as who gets reps and work with ones and twos, if we actually do cut someone loose, how guys react to the situation they are placed in. this is a great situation for our club to be in, having some decent qb options. competition has been strong at every position and it is bringing the best out of people, and the worst. its great for the team and the fan cause i believe however the depth chart ends up it will come from a solid competition.

I don't think he meant the post(he may have), I think the musical QB's is what he is talking about. I think we all want some answers, but need to be pattient.

I think Henne is getting the snaps so they can see if he is really ready to be the #2 guy, which is to say the guy they bring in if Pennington shreds his shoulder again.
If the coaches believe he is ready, then they can get rid of Josh and have Beck #3. That makes the most sense. Beck is young and seems to struggle with the speed of the game (decision making, etc) right now. However, he's only in the start of year #2, so I don't think it's wise to get rid of a 2nd round pick QB at that stage. If the game can slow down enough for him where he can take advantage of his good arm, he should have value. The problem for the fins, is if they decide that Henne is not ready to be #2 (a guy who they can be confident coming in off the bench). In that scenario, Josh would be the obvious #2. Unfortunately, that leaves 2 youngs QB's that would be ideal #3 candidates. You either have to keep all 4, or cut one. Neither is a good scenario. Alternative is having a #2 guy that you don't have confidence in. |

I don't think the two of you are really disagreeing on this main fundamental point. While DL has a more positive spin on Henne's performance so far, not to put words in his mouth, but in terms of this thread, which is largely about how the coaches might go about making their decisions, you guys seem to be agreeing that a rookie QB should not be ruled out if he earns the spot. I agree as well |

I'm not absolutely convinced that the dramatic increase in reps for Henne translates into 'grooming' him for the number two. I think that we are still VERY early in the evaluation period and the coaches may be doing just that...
Pennigton obviously needs the time with the first unit to get up to speed but I think that the coaches decided they liked the Tampa game... and then took the approach 'Why don't we see what we got here' in Henne... While first team reps are very limited and valuable, it is still early and I hate to say it but maybe we don't know how the depth chart breaks down quite simply because they don't know... YET. This dramatic shift in reps as this post suggests was a test in two ways... One, to see Henne more... Two, to test the mental toughness of Beck and McCown.

I can honestly see them keeping all 4 for a while into the actual season.
The thing is, even if they don't want to keep Beck on the team, he has trade value. They will want to maximize that value by waiting to trade him until the perfect situation arises, kind of like what happened with JT and the Redskins. I think McCown can come off the bench and play back-up obviously better than Beck. He has won games on really bad teams in the past. He obviously isn't the most talented guy in the league, but he isn't really getting the respect around here that his career has EARNED him either. |
