MERGEDX2: Analysts praise Pennington signing

Quote:
The Dolphins' signing of Chad Pennington was widely praised Saturday by longtime NFL executives and prominent quarterbacks-turned-TV analysts.

''This,'' CBS' Boomer Esiason said, ``was a no-brainer. They will be a smarter and tougher team, and now they've got a good quarterback who has a point to prove.''

Said CBS' Phil Simms: ``Pennington has all the intangibles, extremely meticulous. Maybe he doesn't throw it hard enough sometimes, but if his arm is as weak as the public perceives it, he wouldn't survive in the NFL this long.''

Longtime former Packers, Raiders and Falcons executive Ken Herock said Pennington ``gives Miami a couple more wins. Instead of being the 29th or 30th team, this moves them up seven, eight spots. If I can get an upgrade at quarterback, I do it. And they've done it.''

Aside from Brett Favre to the New York Jets, Joe Theismann called Pennington's pickup ''as important an acquisition as any team'' made this summer.

Former Redskins and Texans general manager Charley Casserly, of CBS, said, ``Pennington is the best quarterback on Miami's roster. He's got more strengths than Josh McCown, and I would pick him over McCown. If you're developing young quarterbacks, you have to have a role model. Now they have a guy to point to -- running an offense, leadership, efficiency.''

I couldn't agree, Pennington isn't our future but he's one of the best stop gaps for a year or two.

Now if Cincy would just release Chad Johnson

Hey what is not to like...if he can get us a few wins and give us some hope while we rebuild then I am all over it...McClown is terrible and to date I have seen nothing from Beck....good move, not a great move but one I can get behind....

thats what i was saying as well. Hes not here to be a solution for the next 10 years hes here to show Henne how to be a pro, how to study tape, and how to bounce back and take criticism. I think this will help Henne be a real good pro, and im not saying hes going to be as good as tom Brady, but Brady had a good pro in Bledsoe showing him how to be the way he is today. I think this was the biggest pick up in the nfl this year period, And its not because of what hes going to do on the field

A little off topic but the numbers I heard do not add up for the jets. 2 mil cap space, farve 12 mil, cut penny opens up 6 mil, theres still 4 mil unaccounted for?

I read a very lengthy bio on Chad a couple days ago.

Not only is Pennington the real genius and not Mangini but Chad actually has a photographic memory.

I heard before that he was a Rhodes Scholar(for those of you who don't know what this means; it means this guy is really really smart and get a lot of things done mentally in a very small amount of time) but I didn't know he was really coming in with the entire Jet playbook and full knowledge of what they do on defense.

Everything about this dude from his early childhood to the present is all good. He was the underdog working hard and surprising coaches all the way through.

Everyone thinks he going to just be here to mentor Henne. Maybe? Maybe not?

Don't be surprised if he takes us to the playoffs and makes the pro-bowl.

He has Zach Thomas devotion and heart. He still is and always has been an extreme competetor.

He does the same kind of nutrition and work out stuff that Zach was doing.

Chad Pennington maybe around a lot longer than some of you think.

No matter what happens, he will never be the whining ego-maniac that Farvre is.

All hail the Pennington, destruction to the Farvre.

yeah that sounds right, but it looks like they will work to re structure the contract so it works for both sides. since he was traded he is officially a jet but i don't think the terms of the contract are sorted out yet

He was a finalist for a Rhodes scholarship but didn't receive one. Like you said though, youhave to be extremely intelligent to even be considered.

Good article on Pennington signing

Said ESPN's Ron Jaworski: ``Josh McCown has the stronger arm, but Chad gives you a better chance. Excellent move. What the young quarterbacks can learn being around him is invaluable.''
But what about the arm strength? ''He can get the ball deep because he has great anticipation,'' Casserly said.
Dolphins tight end Sean Ryan, who played with Pennington last year, downplayed the arm strength issue, noting, ``He always got the ball where it needed to be. He puts great touch on the ball and knew where his receivers were going to be. And he's got an inner drive that's unsurpassed.''
Esiason said Pennington ``does not have a quick release. It's methodical, but he's got a very catchable pass, is a high-percentage guy and is as unselfish a player as there is in the NFL.''
What about the argument that because the Dolphins are rebuilding, they should play Chad Henne immediately? That would be a mistake, the analysts said.
'Too many people say, `We need a future quarterback,' '' Simms said. ``The Dolphins are worried about winning games now.''
Esiason gives this example: 'If Pennington is at the line and the defense they're facing is overloaded, he can change the play and go the other way. A young quarterback can't do that because he hasn't seen that. At least the guys in the huddle now know that the guy giving them the plays knows what he's doing. A rookie has big hub-cap eyes like, `What the heck is going on?' ''

I apologize if this has been posted already.

However, this is a good article on what people outside the organization think. A few of these comments are from former NFL QBs. I have to agree with this stufff.
