Detroit out of the Brees Sweepstakes

From The Detroit Free Press: "As for the Lions pursuing Brees, president Matt Millen was asked about that Tuesday. He said the Lions couldn't afford Brees and were looking for a backup, not a starter. ..."

I don't believe them. They have the money to sign him and it would be dumb for them not to go after a starting QB.

They can have Gus for a back-up!
Really though, as much Gus bashing as I do I hope Gus sticks around this year as a back-up

The Lions have Harrington, wether you like it or not its his job to lose. Lets not complain on who they need and what they are doing, lets be happy thats one less team we have to worry about.

Even still, I find it hard to believe that Detriot and Miami were the ONLY ones in the running for Brees.

Cutler won't be there when they are on the clock. He will be a top 5 pick and either the Titans or Jets will likely draft him.

No, there are most likely more than the two pursuing him, but its one less team in the battle.

One team I was worried about for Brees was the Jets but they are in such cap hell that there is no way they could afford him.

Now that the NFL has granted Detroit a lot more salary cap room it can't be assumed that they're out of the running for Brees. And while I do expect them to stick with Harrington, it's not out of the question that they'll decide to go in another direction if Martz and Marinelli watch enough film.

How can Detroit not have enough $$$ ???

They were just awarded an 11.75 million dollar salary cap credit due to playtime incentive that Shaun Rodgers did not meet.

With all the other areas they need to focus on.....Millen is implying that money would be better spent there....and a backup QB shouldnt be paid Starter money.

If Harrington was paid less then you could argue he is the backup (whether he starts or not) but his contract, but a matching contract for Brees would not be smart.

Millen is actually using GM common sense.....I can see why it threw you! LOL!

Good for Miami if Saban wants Brees.

Even if the lions want Brees, it doesn't mean that he wants to play for them....I think Brees is coming here.
