League Meetings: New Rule Proposals

With the upcoming owners meetings, the league will be discussing several new rule changes. I wrote an article at my site about which changes are worth pursuing. There are some interesting ones, including changes to overtime and pass interference calls. Check it out and let me know your thoughts.

Tampa Bay has proposed including all penalties other than offensive holding as open for instant replay.
That won't pass, as much was I want it to because the NFL Officials are infallable.:rolleyes2

Well, how about any PI call over 20 net yards can be reviewable, since often times they change the outcome of a game. It saddens me to see inconsistent referee discrepencies do just that, change a game.

In their defense, it all happens so fast, so it is difficult to judge, which is why reviewable PI calls longer than 20 yards should be implemented.

I don't think changing the kickoffs from the 30 to the 35 yard line (in overtime) will make much of a difference (in teams who win the coin toss winning the game). I think 10 yards might make a difference but not 5.

I think clarifying player's injuries is a great idea....especially for those of us who play Fantasy Football and are not sure whether a player is really hurt or whether a coach like Bellichick is trying to pull a fast one.

I am all for having a ref in the booth reviewing calls, rather than doing it on the field.

Sounds like the NFL does a pretty good job in reveiwing what penalties and changes are working and what needs fixing.

Not mentioned, roughing the QB penalties need to be re-evaluated. Not advocating open season on QBs, but the current rules are just strict IMO.

Like the OT kickoff from 35, making instant replay permanent, "QB" radio for defensive captain, time for playoff coaches to interview, injury reports.

Don't like the penalty for spiking, agree w/ the article. Spiking isn't excessivlely bad. Or the reviews for all penalties...could see officials calling more penalties even if their not sure of the foul and hope replay gets it right.

Waffling on the pass interference.

I definitely agree with you on this issue. The roughing the QB penalties have really gotten out of hand. They obviously need the added protection of the penalty since they are more vulnerable than any other player, but a lot of the calls that have been made are pretty ridiculous, especially when a top QB is involved (Brady, Manning, etc.). A QB is still a football player just like any other guy on the field, and being a football player means getting hit. Safety is obviously the highest priority, but these guys shouldn't be babied. They are being paid to play the same game as the 21 other guys on the field and shouldn't be shielded from the common contact that everyone else endures.

I dont agree with PI being a 15 yard penalty though. It should be a spot foul! If a CB knows hes beat for a 40 yard gain, he can simply tackle the WR flagerantly, or interfere flagerantly enough to ensure the pass is dropped. Every CB will be trained to commit PI penalties in this circumstance, and would ruin the game imo.
