Lions likely will put in claim for Kevin JohnsonLions likely will put in claim for Browns' top receiver, who was released Wednesday, November 12, 2003
By Tom Kowalski ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions are expected to put in a claim for the Cleveland Browns' leading receiver Kevin Johnson, who was unexpectedly released on Tuesday. The Lions have until 4 p.m. today to issue a claim for Johnson, who is on waivers. There are five teams ahead of the Lions who will be awarded Johnson if they put in a claim (it's the inverse order of team's records this season). The Oakland Raiders are first in line and the other teams ahead of the Lions are the Atlanta Falcons, San Diego Chargers, Chicago Bears and Jacksonville Jaguars. http://www.mlive.com/lions/stories/i...5434249410.xml

Kevin Johnson, Cut By The Browns, Claimed By DetroitWide receiver Kevin Johnson wasn't out of work long. Less than 24 hours after being released by the Cleveland Browns, "KJ" was picked up off waivers by the Detroit Lions. Johnson was released by the Browns on Tuesday, one week after coach Butch Davis benched him. Johnson had his starting job taken by Davis who was displeased with the five-year veteran's performance this season. Team President Carmen Policy, at a Wedneday morning news conference, said says Browns coaches have not been able to help Johnson perform to the level of expectations they had for him. Johnson has had a strained relationship with Davis, who tried to trade the wide receiver as early 2001, his first year as Cleveland’s coach. Johnson is surprised over his release, and says he'll miss Cleveland, and especially its fans. The 27-year-old Johnson has led the Browns in receiving since 1999. His best season was in 2001 when he had career highs with 84 receptions more than 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns.
