As far as I am concerned San Francisco actually is as bad as I originally had thought they were. Don't get me wrong, they're still one of the worst teams in the league but they could easily be 2-2 right now and we don't know what the outcome of the Arizona game would have been if they weren't completely depleted with injuries, but at this point I expected them to be 0-4. My opinion is... if they had planned on pulling Tim Rattay this early in the season (and it's not his fault why they are 1-3), why not just start with Alex Smith from the start? Tim Rattay is an average QB not a below average QB in my opinion and I still feel he is the best option for them right now. This isn't like the Kurt Warner/Eli Manning situation but I just don't see the logic in not starting Alex Smith from the start if they pulled Rattay so early.

Its hard to get players to buy into a season where you are going to start a rookie Qb to give him experience. Nolan had to start Rattay since Smith looked so poor in the preseason (Feeley probaly had a better preseason than Smith), he didnt want players to think he had quit on the season. He gave the team a shot with Rattay and they couldnt get it done. Now is a good time to put Smith in, hes got more practice, knows the offense better and if he plays well the team could rally around him for the next season. It was like when Coughlin went with Warner last year, everyone knew Manning was the future but you couldnt let the players think you were tossing the towel in before the season started.

Alex Smith Named Starter49ers | Smith to Make First Career Start
Tue, 4 Oct 2005 16:06:14 -0700 Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan promised changes and changes are what the 49ers are getting this week, as Nolan has promoted rookie QB Alex D. Smith to the starting lineup. Smith, who was the No. 1 selection in this year's NFL Draft, will make his first career start during Week 5 at home against the Indianapolis Colts. |

Perfect situation for Smith. No one expects San Francisco to do anything. Smith can use this season as a learning experiance and be ready to play next year. I agree with this approach as opposed to signing a old veteran or an also ran to the team. Playing when there is little expectation to win is valuable time for a young qb. If he loses oh well. If he wins he is a hero.

Not going to bode well for Alex when he has to face a tough 4-0 team with a relatively good defense and terrific pass rush......
