NFL | Committee will propose penalizing players who spike the ball

NFL | Committee will propose penalizing players who spike the ball
Sat, 24 Mar 2007 09:30:23 -0700
Chris Pika, of AtlantaFalcons.com, reports the NFL's Competition Committee will propose penalizing players who spike or throw the ball after plays on the field. Touchdowns will not be subject to the proposed five-yard penalty. " This is an issue that has really shown itself in the last two years where it seems like every play -- whether a three-yard gain or a 15-yarder -- results in a player stepping up and spiking the ball," Atlanta Falcons general manager and committee co-chairman Rich McKay said. If a player spiked the ball after gaining a first down, the ball would be moved back five yards but it will still be first-and-10.

IMO it's ridiculous for a player to act like he's just scored a TD after a short gain, especially if that play doesn't even result in a first down. Just my opinion however.

I also hate when players do that but I hate even more that the nfl keeps getting rid of every celebration that the players do. Let them play!

I agree as well to a certain point, as long as a TD celebration isn't obviously choreographed or last for an extended period of time, I say let them play and enjoy.

how about instead of this we go after the receivers who get up and go after officials and cry about why a flag wasnt thrown for pass interference. that ticks me off more than a guy spiking a ball after a first down... i dont think i can even ever recall seeing that anyways. sounds stupid, but i guess its really pointless for a guy to do anyways, its a first down, or a short gain, who cares. celebrate a td all you want, but a first down... who cares. its the whiney receivers that really upset me... crying about every little thing... kind of like im doing right now! hah

That is ridiculous. Let the players have the ability to make an *** out of themselves.

If they ban spiking the ball someone should get rid of whoever brings up these stupid rules.

IMO, it'd just be better to ban talking, smiling, basic communication, and joy altogether. Bring the guys out on flat-deck in meditative silence, have them play the game, and go back to the locker room, where they will continue to be fastened in coffin-like sleep chambers until the next weeks action.
