Paolantonio: Favre's Overrated

Sal Paolantonio called Brett Favre overrated and argued the last decade of his career was pedestrian. Paolantonio not only attacked Favre's credentials, but blasted the media for heaping undeserved praise on the quarterback. Paolantonio bases the bulk of his argument on the quarterback's playoff record in the past decade, when the Packers were 3-7 and Favre posted a mediocre passer rating of 77.8. He cites Favre's overtime interceptions in playoff losses to Philadelphia in 2004 and the Giants in January as examples of a player not nearly as good as his press clippings. That narrow view fails to acknowledge that without Favre, the Packers in many cases never would have qualified for the playoffs. One measure of a great player is how he makes his teammates better, and Favre was the master at elevating players around him. For example, Favre's starting receivers in 2001 were an aging Antonio Freeman and an ordinary Bill Schroeder. Yet the Packers produced a remarkable 12-4 record, largely due to Favre and his 94.1 quarterback rating.

favre does make his WRs better for the most part because his WRs dont have to be wide open to get the ball with his arm. on the flip side, he did joke all the time. and he is overrated.

I just don't see how someone can say Brett is overrated..I mean he came in week in and week out and did the best job that he could and did it many teams with a team without a lot of talent...He played through so many injuries that it is crazy and I know some people may not like him because he broke Dan's record but he is not as good as Dan...But definately a fantastic player and an even better person...I have nothing but respect for him.

I for one think the media massaged his ball waay to much and always thought he was nothing more than a tough and gutsy gunslinger not a great qb but a real good one but again not great

I agree with him. Favre is overrated. He is a Gunslinger, a guy that just hurls the ball in the air. People make him out to be the greatest which he isn't.

Maj, it's a little more complicated than that.

Rex Grossman is a gunslinger. Brett Favre is a legend.

There have been many "gunslingers" in the NFL, but there is a reason why we all know the name Brett Favre. If not the greatest clutch player of all time, with a few exceptions in the last few years in the playoffs, he is certainly one of the greatest.

And to say he has had a mediocre last 10 years is quite odd. He struggled in 05 and 06, but was superb last year, and considerably solid prior to 05.

And while these weren't his best days, one could certainly argue that his Monday night game against Oakland that year was one of the greatest individual performances in the last 10 years period. Football, or whatever. Period, again.

Marino is way overrated too then. What's his playoff record the final 10 years of his career? With a Jacksonville *** whipping to end things [they scored over 60 points I believe on his final playoff game].

Anyone with knowledge of football would know them scoring 60 points is due to sucky defense not marino (or any qb for that matter).

As for Brett Favre, he's very overrated in the fact that all the media is calling him the BEST QB to ever play. Any QB to hold the record for most interceptions all the time doesnt deserve the best QB ever title even if they barely have the most TD's all time. On top of that his playoff performances further bring out my point.

I agree, while Favre was a great QB, he was very overrated. I also cant stand the constant hardon people have for this guy. Every single day there is some story or whatever about him. Who gives a flying ****? Quite frankly, Im glad he finally retired and now dont have to hear about him that much anymore.

Of course Favre is overrated by some but, then again, so is Marino. They're just football players. They're not gods or superheros, despite the ramblings of some. If either of them was as good as some people make out, they could have won the Superbowl every year with all of us making up the rest of the roster. Having written all that, they're also underrated by others. It's just one guy's opinion in an attempt to get a column filled with type. If you agree with him cheer and if you disagree boo. It's all a bit pantomime.

ESPN reporter Sal Paolantonio has received a record number of e-mails in response to his controversial column about retired quarterback Brett Favre, with the majority coming from angry Packers fans. In response to a column by Press-Gazette sports editor Mike Vandermause that appeared online and in print today, Paolantonio sent this letter to the editor via e-mail: "Thank you for Mike Vandermause's smackdown of my espn.com column on Brett Favre. But I take issue with one major point: I was not trying to criticize Brett Favre, only offer some healthy perspective, provide an alternative take. Favre, as I pointed out, is a bonafide first ballot Hall of Famer. But I just wanted to hit the pause button on the over-the-top deification of No. 4. In my view, he is not even the greatest Packers quarterback of all time. That would be Bart Starr. Bart Starr has always been treated like Ringo Starr -- underappreciated and, these days, overlooked. I was trying to provide some historical context that my brethren in the media often ignores. By the way, I do use a hairblower, but I never bring it to the press box with me."

Please never compare Favre with Marino. Favre is a good QB not a great QB. I don't care that he won super bowls. Wining a super bowls does not prove your a great QB. Marino is probably the greatest Passing QB of all time.

Favre is overrated by anybody who claims he is the best QB. Favre is maybe a top 10 QB. That certainly is very good but there have been many people rating him higher than that of late.
