Question about a ruleing in football.I was at a local highschool football game last night. And a kid (his name is Joey, just for stories sake) scored 4 touchdowns in 2 minutes and 36 seconds, 4 different ways (I think). The only reason it matters is, because it would be the first time in school history a player scored a TD 4 different ways in one game, not to mention all within such a short period of time. Heres what happend, you make the call.
Touchdown: ...1) Joey takes the handoff and runs it in for a TD. ...2) Opposing team gets the ball, first play, QB throws a pick, Joey returns it for a TD. ...3) Opposing team gets ball, goes 3 and out, Joey takes the punt to the house. ...4) Here's where it gets a bit tricky. The opposing team gets the ball, first play (again), the QB rolls out, no ones open so he desides to run. The QB breaks a few takles in the backfield, and almost makes it back to the line of scrimmage, when the linebacker wraps him up. As he's going down he decides to pitch it (backwards) to the runningback trailing the play. Joey then jumps in, catches the ball in the air and returns it for his 4th TD in 7 offensive plays. My initial thought was since it was backward lateral it should count as a fumble recovery. But the announcer said Joey comes up with second INT returned for a TD. So after the game I went out to the bar, and I saw my old linebacker coach who still coaches the team. I asked him about the play and he said since it was behind the line of scrimmage it was still an INT. We argued for a bit, but I am still convinced it was a fumble recovery.

One more situation, which is similar to the current one, and should have the same ruleing.
What if a QB takes the snap, throw it to a wide reciver split out toward the sideline. But the throw is backward (making it a lateral rather than a forward pass), and a corner jumps the route, catches the ball returning it for a TD. I know if that ball hits the ground its a fumble. But not sure what the ruleing is if a Corner would catch the ball. Fumble??? Or INT??

I cover high school football for the paper in my area, it's an interception. If it hit the ground it would have been a fumble recovery.

Anytime the ball is thrown, no matter forward or backwards, and the other team catches it, its an interception. The only time you can "catch" a fumble is if for example the running back is running and gets lit up and the ball goes flying up in the air. That would be a fumble recovery. But any throw backwards or forwards that is caught by the opposing team is an interception.

I donno but, it sounds like Cam Cameron might draft that opposing QB in the second round in about 4 years.

I was a high school ref for a little bit a few years back. If he pitched it backwards I think it's not a fumble recovery and it's legit.
