Roselvelt Colvin to hit FA

Quote:
Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe reports that the Patriots are expected to release LB Rosevelt Colvin today.

His $5.5 million base salary combined with a foot injury sealed his fate. We're still surprised because they are very thin and old at the position. Colvin quickly becomes one of the most intriguing names available at linebacker, while the Patriots need to add a lot talent to the position.

Two Things come to my mind, personally I would love to snag the guy up. He could defitnetly help us if we are really going 3-4. The other thing is the Jets are gonna be all over this guy....

I don't doubt his abilities but he's (According to NFL.com's stats on him) yet to start a full sixteen game season and that's a worry. Of course, some of that may be down to his being used 'situationally' and not necessarily at the start of a game.

Also, you've got to wonder why a team which is supposedly as 'linebacker needy' as the press keeps saying the Patriots are is getting rid of him. Is it just too high a salary? Would he accept less to play for a worse team? That would be odd.

Colvin had his moments in New England, but ultimately was a letdown after the big deal he signed in 2003. Colvin becomes one of the best free agent linebackers available.

To be honest for a cheap price - which he should take due to the fac that he has not completed a season since 04 he would be a great pick up. When he was healthy he casued problems for teams. He is a great pass rusher and whn he was out of the line up the Pats missed him. Again a great edge guy for cheap and if healthy.

I would take him in a heartbeat, but only if he's willing to accept a contract in the 1-1.5 mil/year range. He'd be a good fit in our D. I would say there's almost no chance we sign him though. He's an older guy at this stage and he's either going to go w/ someone paying him more or a team that offers him a good chance to win and earn another big payday.

He was scheduled to count $7.6 million against the salary cap next season, the last of his current contract.

7.6 mill cap hit and his injury history most likely sealed his fate with NE. Although it hasn't been reported I have to think they Patriots probably wanted to restructure his contract and he said no.
Don't rule out a return to NE should he not receive much interest at his asking price and decides he is willing to take a pay cut.
