Killed unarmed Iraqis, ex-marine tells hearing

"Jimmy Massey, a former marine staff sergeant, told an immigration and refugee board hearing in Toronto that he and his fellow marines shot and killed more than 30 unarmed men, women and children and even shot a young Iraqi who got out of his car with his arms in the air."

didnt read the article yet, but you also have to remember how these suicide attacks are occurring.... marines move in to secure surrendering or apparently unarmed civilians only to be blown up by hidden bombs. i would imagine this makes it a little tough to blindly trust anyone surrendering....

EDIT: not an illegal war either, just wanted to drop that in.... brought up some good points about how iraqis may not be understanding american forces over there. its a possibility, but stop is a pretty universal signal..... and then the gun pointed at them should just be the icing on the cake

Anybody paying attention back in 2003 knew this was happening. The soldiers at the checkpoints had no way of telling if approaching vehicles where armed with explosives or not. As I recall, after a few days of deadly car bombing, the brass changed the policy and had the troops shoot to kill all who approached and did not stop upon signals. The rules of engagement change with conditions in the field. I guess the action is not the news but that rather a soldies seeks asylum under this pretense.

To me it sounds like Hinzman enjoys the benefits of being in the military but not the cost to be paid of going into action.

"Mr. Hinzman said he requested conscientious-objector status and not a discharge from the army because he wanted to keep his commitment to serve"

... and I don't believe the "I woudl have gone to Afghanistan" line.

By this guys logic he would not have bombed Munich in WWII. (maybe that's a bad example)

It's good that he is not in Iraq. He would have been a danger to anyone he was fighting with.

no offense to you in particular, because i dont know if this applies to you. however, i find it hard to take serious or even enjoy reading articles that some people post because they scour the news trying to find as many negative things as they can find to bring up. the bush administration may not be the best, but what we are doing in iraq is a good thing. and to say that only bad things are happening is just false....

Sorry you missed the obvious point. It is a war, the majority going on in any flippin' war will be bad. I'm not sure why so many of you think there is going to be a beam of sunshine to cheer you lib's up in the middle of a flippin' war.
