Will Schwarzenegger sign prison condom bill?

Public health agencies and nonprofits would begin distributing condoms to California prison inmates under a bill sent this week to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a measure modeled after similar programs in other states and cities.

Democrats who support the effort said making condoms available will help control the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

"Everyone knows that sex happens in prison, and short of solitary confinement for all ... inmates, the state is unable to prevent it," Assemblyman Paul Koretz, D-West Hollywood, said in a statement.

Various studies put the incidence of homosexual activity inside prisons at between 30 percent and 60 percent of male inmates, while the rate of HIV infection is at least five times that of the outside population, Koretz said.

Or, they could just start enforcing the law that prohibits inmates from having sex with one another....

hmmm, maybe if they didn't commit crimes, they wouldn't be in prison to begin with...and wouldn't need to worry about a condom covered or non-condom covered rear entry.

No sympathy here from me.

I dont think this is really an issue of approving of gay sex in prison. Just a economic issue. We have to have health services for anyone sick in prison, if they get HIV or a VD then we have to spend a fortune treating them. Easier and less expensive to just have condoms available.

exactly...cheaper to buy the dman condom than cheaper to pay for HIV treatment, cause in CA, prisoners get HIV treatment for free.

I say give them the condoms. But I draw the line at viagra! There should be no state sponsored 4 hour stiffies in the prison system.

Yeah I was goign to say hell no if the tax payers need to pay for the condoms (obviously) but if it'll save money on HIV treatments (as HIV costs more to treat than condoms I would imagine) then condoms aren't a bad idea.

Trust me when I tell you this...and I know as it was my career...

Inmates go to medical for every little sniffle...every little ache...everytime they don't want to go to work.

This will do nothing to curb the cost of health care with a correctional institution. Inmates are screened for HIV when they are confined and if they are positive, begin receiving treatment right away. And just like in the Army, the three forms of communication...telephone, telegraph, tell a prisoner...everyone knows who's positive...and no one tries anything with those prisoners who are HIV postive. TRUST ME!!!!! I know!

So my original statement still stands...no sympathy from me.
