It sounds like the Series 1 would be easier to link to a PC, depending on how complicated and how documented that USB hack is for the Series 2. Is Series 1 still available? Also how does the HDTV that is supposed to be coming for DirectTV tivo effect all this. I'd hate to set up then wish I'd waited for the new. What do you think? Thanks again.
The series 2 is definitely a little more complicated to set up. But, everything is well documented on the sites I listed with complete walkthroughs, and some people even have pre-hacked images available for download. In that case the process ends up being almost exactly the same as installing a larger drive.

The Series 1's are no longer made, and are EXTREMELY expensive to pick up on ebay. As there are a few hacks you can do on the Series 1 that are not available on Series 2 that make them valuable to DirecTV "pirates", and most of the ones sold on ebay come pre-modded with all the hacks, so some people are willing to pay more for that. If you do an ebay search for "DirecTivo" you will find lots of listings for modded Tivo's.

As far as the HDTV, it looks like the HDTivo will be using pretty much the same OS as the normal Tivo's so it is likely that most of the hacks available for the standard-def receiver will work on the Hi-def. But, nobody will know until they are officially released. BUT, for archiving purposes HDTV doesn't make much sense (YET) as the broadcasts take up about 10 times the space as a standard-res broadcast (8-10 gigs per hour instead of 800-1000 MB's), and there is no HD-DVD player available yet. So you would need to downconvert anything you wanted to archive.

That's what I've got now. I've got the best one around (at least it was before the stopped making it).

But I'm looking for the best of the best in terms of quality. And a $50 tv tuner card, while excellent and still serving a purpose for me, isn't quite the same.
