Just finished reading "Patriot Reign"I know its blasphemy but this is a great book for those who like to read behind the scenes stuff about the NFL. Basically a journalist got complete access to the pats for 2 years.
Interesting to read that the Pats were either going to pick Rattay or Brady to be Bledsoe’s Backup. In 2001 Bledsoe was going to get benched eventually because the coaches thought he was an idiot. Saban and BB talked a lot about coverages. In 2004 Carey was not even on their board, and BB said the 4 players he would be willing to trade up for were Wilfork, D’Angelo Hall, Vilma, and Dunta Robinson. When BB took over he had no 1st round pick and no cap space and cut popular players like Bruce Armstrong and Ben Coates in order to have cap space the next year. He took the hit the first year and won the SB his 2nd year. Talks a lot about gameplans, especially the one against the Rams in the SB. Things about how Martz plays can mirror each other but always have a slight variation and the whole offense is ran through Faulk (very interesting for you football heads and much better described) Jimmy Johnson gave BB the advice that you build through the draft, sign only the players you can’t win without, and use free agency for depth, not to build a team. They thought Antonio Bryant was a turd so they didn’t draft him, thought Brandon Lloyd was entertaining in his interview and told him that when they draft him he’s still going to have to “Shut the f*** upâ€. Lot of player interaction, for instance 1 player said that the pats were the first team he played on where the black and white players would hang out together saying most teams black players sit on 1 side of the cafeteria and whites on the other. Damien Woody says that the Patriots were closer then any team he’s ever been on including college and H.S. They also talk about a meeting in 2002 when Belichick is talking about the team’s inability to stop the run and says something the effect of “ I don’t care what we do against Buffalo’s horsesh*t o-line†The Dolphins need to build chemistry, need to follow the model, and I’ll be honest the book mae me envious. But I do recommend it.

The book is a good read, written by Michael Holley (some of you may remember him from "I, MAX" on Fox.) Not the most in-depth thing ever written, and is a quick read as well.
Goes into detail about how the organization is run, and how theywere built into the contenders they are. Interesting from a football perspective if anything.

Culpepper says: "When I'm healthy I'm an elite quarterback in this league". I guess he's never been healthy because he's had only one winning season in 7 years, that included 83 fumbles, 89 INT's, & 249 sacks. That's not elite. Culpepper's like a 7-Up commercial, never had it, never will. ![]() Was Culpepper ever Mobile? Culpepper sacked 249 times in 7 years; Marino was sacked 270 times in 17 years. You do the math. P.S. If he's so good why is he still unemployed??? |

of all the coaches i believe that saban is a friend and good football thinker from what i have read.BB always talks about him with more respect other than weis.I believe Saban is brilliant but remember BB did some mistakes in clevland and learned to do the job better the second time around.
Saban has only 2 yrs as a coach and for some reason he is expected to match with BB>not going to happen he is learning and is maturing as a coach give him time . |
